Your chances at art schools will be very heavily based on your art portfolio. Colleges like RISD will look at your art portfolio first and foremost, and then grades and test scores and other package materials afterwards if the portfolio is of high quality. You could have excellent grades but if your art portfolio is not so good they will pass. So- draw, paint, or do whatever your art form is as much as you possibly can to increase your skills, and take art classes or programs over the summer as well as during the school year if possible. Good luck! - RISD grad.

Agree with @bookmouse. If I can give any sort of recommendation, it’s that you show variety, both in mediums and subject matters. Make sure you have a few observational pieces as well. It’s also important to determine some sort of speciality. If you’re really good at pen drawings, work on some. If you’re really good at perspective drawings, go for it. Find something that you enjoy and can hopefully do well (practice helps) and let it be the emphasis of your portfolio.

Your academics should be more than substantial to get into these schools. Your volunteer work is also great, but make sure to accent them with extra-curriculars. It could be beneficial to pick EC’s that relate to your major of choice - start an art mag, perhaps.

Assuming you’re able to compile a good portfolio, I’d chance you as:
SCAD- Match
RISD- High match
RIT- Match
Cooper Union- Reach, as it is for just about everyone who applies.

The question is not if you can get in, but rather if art school is worth it and being in major debt for the rest of your life for something that won’t pay off.

It can be hard to make a living in fine arts, but art schools also offer majors in graphic design, architecture, industrial design, apparel design, and many careers than can be lucrative as well as rewarding.
