university of wisconsin - madison
UT austin
UC San Diego
IU bloomington (i live in indiana)
bucknell university
boston university
lehigh university

which do i have a good shot at and which ones do i not have a great chance of getting into?

Ok, stats wise you’re looking fine. Though you’re GPA is a bit low, if you have a high class rank that will help. You’re ECs however are great, and your SATs are in the right range for your schools. So here’s my take
Chances:
-UCSD-Reach
-Villanova, Bucknell, BU-slight reach, your SAT is on par but your GPA is a bit low
-University of Wisconsin -Madison- slight reach/match (I’m not quite sure which one but check out this link it might help for your madison chances:
http://www.admissions.wisc.edu/image...pectations.pdf
-Penn State, UT Austin, IU Bloomington, Lehigh University -match

Now all the colleges that are slight reaches are only out of your range because of GPA, for the most part. If you can write kick-ass essays and get good recs. I think you would have a good shot at those schools too. Good Luck.

i was surprised when you said that i was a match for UT austin, because i thought they were really tough on out of state applicants. i checked stats on collegeboard.com and only 8% of those accepted are out of state. but i’ll definitely try my chances

Sorry my mistake with UT Austin…your SAT puts you in its range and since your well-rounded I though you would have a good shot. I totally forgot about how much of an in-state preference they had. That would make UT Austin a reach too, my bad sorry :(

Very good chance at UW-Madison, especially with the good ECs.
Decent chance (slight reach) at Penn State/Villanova - good essays will help your chances here.
I’m not very familiar with the others.

Well, I think your SAT score is slightly on the low side for San Diego. It definately isn’t bad but I would try to take it again for a higher score. That, and try out the ACT, which many (including myself) find wayy easier than the SAT. Your weighted gpa isn’t that bad. The UCs give your gpa an extra boost for any AP and Honors classes (up to 8 semesters) taken during the Sophomore and Junior year of high school. And the UCs also don’t count your freshman year grades ;).

UCSD uses “Comprehensive Review” for its selection process. They award a certain amount of points for your GPA, test scores, extracurriculars, volunteer work, hardships, etc.

do you still think i’d have a good chance for UC’s even though i’m out of state?
i looked at stats and i saw that less than 10% of all applicants accepted are from out of state. it seems like they give a huge preference to california residents, just like UT texas.
but i certainly have taken plenty of honors classes and 4 AP classes. i’ll still apply though for sure.

Yes, you should definately apply regardless of what you think your acceptance chances are. You will have a 0% chance of acceptance if you do not apply. Besides, there is a movement within some UCs (especially Berkeley) to accept more out of state and international applicants to get more money into the university.

I would just try to get those test scores up, for more security. And write a bomb essay. Start brainstorming ideas right now. Whatever you do, don’t procrastinate!!! haha :)
