CSU/UC GPA: 3.68
ACT: 28 (I’m taking it again in June and I’m trying to get a 30)
Major: Biology
By senior year I’ll have completed 3 or 4 APs (I’m deciding whether or not I should take AP bio next year) and 2 honors classes
I’m a junior in high school and plan on applying to the following schools:
SDSU
SFSU
CalPoly SLO
CalPoly Panoma
CSUF(Fullerton)
CSULB
UCD
UCR
UCI
UCSC
ASU
UMinn
FSU
I’m a CA resident and I’m local to UCI (Im 20-30 mins from CSUF, I don’t know if that makes me local.)
My extracurricular list is pretty measly
-A few clubs, no leadership positions
-I took a class last summer @UCSD on nuerology/ brain plasticity. It was a part of a program where we stayed on campus for a few weeks to get a taste of the college experience.
-I tutor math
-Over the summer I do some volunteering at a local food shelf
I’m African American (I know it doesn’t matter for UC/CSU but I think it does for some of the OOS schools I’m applying to)
Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated!
UC’s do not consider if you are local/non-local but Cal States do. Here is a link so you can check which Cal State is your local Cal State:
http://www.calstate.edu/sas/onestopkiosk/documents/CSULocalAdmission-ServiceAreas.pdf
All Cal States except SLO rank applicants by Eligibility index (EI) and major.
EI= (CSU/UC GPA x 200) + (ACT composite x10) so your EI is 1016.
SDSU would be a Match-High Match.
SFSU would be a safety school.
Cal Poly Pomona/ CSU Fullerton/CSULB probably Match schools.
For SLO, they use an MCA point system which is discussed in this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/1694769-confused-about-mca-score.html
You will be ranked by your MCA points and major. SLO’s acceptance rates by major can vary greatly, so much will depend upon your intended major. CS has about a 7% acceptance rate while Dairy Science around a 90%+ acceptance rate.
For the UC’s, GPA/Test scores/HS course rigor and your essays will determine your chances but they are very GPA focused. Only 3 of the 9 campuses have average GPA’s below a 4.0 so, your UC GPA will make most of these schools a tough admit. Your ACT test score is within range for most of the UC’s except for the top schools like UCB/UCLA/UCSD. Your essays and EC’s could make you stand out, but these are subjective to quantify.
Here is data from 2016 regarding UC GPA and admit rates. Competitive majors (STEM/Psych/Econ/Business) will require higher than average stats.
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79:
UCB: 2%
UCLA: 3%
UCSD: 6%
UCD: 15%
UCSB: 14%
UCI: 13%
UCSC: 59%
UCR: 78%
UCM: 92%
Best of luck.
you look fine but watch out for SLO and davis
