Currently, I'm a sophomore at Georgia State University with a 3.86 GPA, majoring in political science with a concentration in pre-law and a minor in history (formerly a journalism major.) I was planning on sending in an application to NYU and Emory to apply for the spring 2010 semester (at the time of submitting my application, I should have well over 60 credits.)

However, although I currently have a decent college gpa, I didn't fair so well in high school and I graduated with a 3.05 GPA and a score of 1700 on the SATs.

So here are my stats:

3.86 college GPA (This may go up to a 3.87 or down to a 3.85 depending upon one of my classes. However, I'm sure that it will rise again during the summer)
A year of dj experience on Georgia State's radio station WRAS-Atlanta (the world's largest college radio station; this also coincided with my former major)
By the time of submitting my application, I'll also have a year of managerial experience at my job, which I have been working at since August of last year
Member of Georgia State's law school club
3.05 high school gpa
1700 combined SATs
over 100 hours of community service (combination of volunteer work in college as well as tutoring elementary school students in high school)
I've also made the dean's list every semester since I've been in college and the president's list once.

I know I could easily get into UGA, but I'm trying to strive higher.

Also, I've read on that NYU no longer reviews your SAT scores after 30 credits and Emory gives you the option to ignore your high school gpa after you've earned 60 credits, so both of these factors should help my chances.

Before anyone comments, yes, I know NYU's financial aid package is horrible for transfer students, but lets just worry about that bridge if I actually get accepted and get the chance to cross it.

my roommate transferred to CAS politics with a higher GPA but WAY less ECs. her high school GPA was a lot higher. she went to a private school. she was a third semester transfer such as myself- we were spring transfers for '08. (transferring in the spring is much more competitive, but we were both desperate to get out of our first colleges.)

she came from a tiny LAC with a 4.0 and had a bunch of music ECs. she applied to CAS and to Cornell and was rejected at Cornell. her high school GPA was a 3.7 and i’m not sure what her SATs were. she admitted to me once that they were kind of low, so they might have been low enough to keep her out of CAS.

right now, she’s a anthropology major, double minor in politics and studio art.

spring admissions are competitive because students usually try to wait out the whole year to transfer. at least, that’s what someone in my department told me. when i transferred, they didn’t accept many media students at all. those students they did accept, were VERY competitive.

keep on top of your paperwork. you find out your admissions decision the same week early decision students get theirs, and it is VERY easy for them to lose your paperwork. i had to resend my transcript twice. it was very surreal, i received my acceptance two years after my initial rejection. . .

tldr; you definitely have a chance, but start working on your application early. NYU will lose some part of it, and you’ll have to rush around to get it all together.

but getting into NYU was the best Christmas present i ever got!

You have a really good chance. Of course, the competition will generally have similar stats to you, but as long as you have good recommendations and essays, then you’ll get in. UGA is the best chance for you, then NYU, then Emory. All are good schools though, which will give you quality education that you can strive in and become successful.
