What are my chances at U of M

Not on my area of the city… People are way more impressed with a kid getting into Michigan then NW. It might be that our schools send so many kids to NW and UChicago every year. Plus these are local to us. I am not talking rank or anything like that. Especially in the suburbs where my practice is. Very few get into Michigan. The reaction of getting into NW is like well OK… That’s nice. When they hear about Michigan the reactions is always, they must be very smart to get in there oos. I didn’t mean it as a dig at NW. More of an observation. I know plenty of happy families that went there.

If I recall your kid goes to Northside Prep. If a kid from Northside can’t get into UM then there is something off there or maybe it has to do with UM wanting more full paying OOS students than not, which wouldnt’ surprise me.

UM admits around 25 from our school every year to maybe 8 or so to NU. We are a heterogeneous public school that takes everyone not a CPS school where you have to apply to attend like it’s a college and it’s based on test scores etc. I am well familiar with the CPS system as I was a teacher in it at a magnet school, so no rebuttal necessary.

I’m hoping that you’re admitted, but straight A’s this semester would help. U Mich is a crap shoot. I’ve seen academically low-achieving jazz musicians from OOS get admitted with scholarships. And I’ve seen a valedictorian from OOS with incredible music and science achievements get admitted to a T20 with a 50% merit tuition scholarship, who got wait-listed (and then admitted) at U Mich (his first choice), but who was so mad that he hadn’t gotten into U Mich on the first look, that he didn’t go there, went to the T20 where he got the 50% tuition scholarship. But in-state, I think it’s a different story.

Well, then you know just because you go to selective enrollment CPS school and even a top one doesn’t guarantee you a spot at any college. Trust me kids like my son got deferred, rejected and wait listed also. Yes, they want full pay. I guess doesn’t every college to an extent.

Yep, it’s all relative and this year is a crazy one to boot!
