<p>My son is a jr in a very reputable virginia high school, but it’s getting harder and harder for these kids to get into top tier schools. He has a strong interest in UC Berkeley and UCLA because of their excellent mathematics and the diversity (it’s all relative) of the student population. How realistic is it for him as an oos applicant (everything is “so far”), and any suggestions for improvements in the .5-1 year he has left:</p>
<p>Jr year: BC Calc, AP Micro/Macro Economics, Honors Physics, Honors Am Hist, English, Geosystems, French 4.
Proposed for Sr year: MultiVar Calc and Linear Algebra, APES, AP Physics, AP Stat, Comparative Religion, a couple more undecideds.
Math Honor Society (all years), school award for top in World History II, Athlete Scholar award (all years)
Sports: Coxswain for JV men’s eight (9th, 10th); probably cox for Var men’s four in upcoming spring season; certified Scuba; adv red belt TKD
ExCurr: VP, Econ Club; VP Community Mentorship Club; Founding Member Bridge Club; Math Tutor/Mentor (20 hr/qtr)
Paid Work Experience: YCC Dept of Interior National Park Service (summer of soph year)</p>
<p>No SATs yet. Unweighted GPA around a 3.6 for 9th and 10th; on track for notable improvement this year.</p>
