What are my chances at UCLA/USC Film Schools?

Hello! I am an aspiring filmmaker (like everyone these days...) and it has been my dream since I can remember myself to go to one of the top film schools like USC, UCLA, NYU..

I am 19 from Israel. Jewish.

Israeli matriculation exams scores (Don't know if they look at this thing... graded from 1 to 100):

Film Studies: 100 (perfect score), French: 93, World History: 86, Math: 93, English: 93, Writing: 82, Bible studies (Yuck :p) 89

SAT scores:
CR: 600. Writing: 650. Math: 680

Activities:
- Been two years in student council.
- Took part in the "First Robotics Competition".
- Founded and operated school radio.
- Volunteered to tutor poor kids.
- Made a short film which was accepted to five film festivals and won four awards including Best Student at the California Film Awards.
- Working as an Israeli Film Critic for the biggest film related site in Israel.

Planning to do:
- Take SAT 2: modern Hebrew, French and World History.
- Volunteer this summer in Africa via UNICEF.

Do I stand a chance??

sorry I got 620 on the critical reading on the SAT

Bump … :p

----bump----

I think you have a shot. When are you thinking of applying? I think the strength of your portfolio is most important factor.

Are you aware one cannot be accepted into UCLA film school as a freshman?

I will be applying next year (2013 class) since I have started the whole thing kida late… and as I’ve said I still have things to do before that.

OhioMom3000, I didn’t know that you can’t apply to UCLA film school as a freshman, could you please explain? Also how about USC, do I have a shot? And what should I do to improve my chances?

Thanks a lot!!!

I believe at UCLA you enter the film school as a junior. So, if you attend as a freshman you will not know whether you will be accepted or not. But, you can always try to transfer in later, I suppose, if you attend another school.

Your SAT scores are good, but if you raise them, it will help, especially being international. Search this site for practice materials. There’s a ton of info. You can raise scores by practicing. Other than that, it really depends on your portfolio.

There are also good schools that offer film production as a major. You sometimes have to search because some are under Communications, Media, etc. Below is a link to the 25 best film schools according to the Hollywood Reporter; some are 4-year universities, not film schools. There is also a lot of info on this site, especially in “Visual Arts and Film Majors” forum.

We have a family member who taught at UCLA. I remember him telling us it is probably THE most difficult department to get into at UCLA. Harder than getting into UCLA Med school. He said the equipment they use is incredibly expensive and they only accept something like 50 students a year. He said it would be far easier for someone who is interested in film to get into the film school at USC, as it is a much larger program there.

That info is probably about 5 years old, so I would suggest you do more research on the various film schools, and what it takes to get in them.

50 students all together, 25 graduates per year.
