I'm a junior at a big, competitive public school in Michigan (So OOS..). Just wondering what my chances are at UNC! I know how hard OOS is but i'm just curious

Stats:
3.83 uw gpa
32 ACT (how much would bringing it up to a 33 help?)
Toughest course load, all AP's and honors
Currently taking AP Chem and AP English Language, tests are at end of year so no scores yet. Next year, taking AP English Lit, AP Gov, Calc BC, AP French

EC's:
Varsity soccer (10,11, soon to be 12)
Captain of soccer team (12, captain's already announced at banquet)
NHS (11,12)
President of Business Admin. Club (11, hopefully 12)
French Club (10,11)
VP of French Club (12)- elections already held for next year
Volunteer at VA Hospital during summer
Volunteer with TopSoccer Program during school year- helping autistic kids in the community play soccer
Columnist for school paper

Oh and Asian male, no legacy

Please chance me! Be honest because if UNC doesn't work out there's always U of M!
Thanks!

You’ll probably make it. I know people (in state) who have gpas in the 3.5s and made it.

But isn’t out of state absurdly difficult? That’s just what i keep hearing haha. But thanks for the feedback!

I don’t think so… maybe it is, but I haven’t heard about it being so hard. I was surprised to find that it was ranked really high. That must be why almost everyone I know wants to go there.

And would taking SAT Subject Tests help me out at all? Any responses would be greatly appreciated!

Wow so it’s been awhile since I’ve posted… But updated stats -
33 ACT
730 Math I, 750 Math II, 740 US History

Applications are coming up this summer so anyone’s opinion would be great
Thanks

I’m actually from Chapel Hill, so I’ve gotten a lot of info from UNC. From your stats, it looks like you’re on the right track for getting in. Just make sure you have good grades for the mid-year report, or else UNC will deny you.

@doberhound1, the in-state kids with 3.5 gpas made it because UNC has to have around 80% in-state students.

could you chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/950561-chance-me-top-schools-ill-chance-you-back.html

Thanks for the chance! I chanced you back

I know it sounds ridiculous, but work as hard as you can to raise or maintain your uw GPA. I think UNC-CH likes to see 4.0+, but all your APs should be a good buffer.

I got in this year (OOS) with worse ECs, 29 ACT, 2140 SAT (superscore), but I also had the 4.0+ uw GPA and a hook.

If I were you, I’d try to harp on one thing that makes you stand out from everybody else.

It’s competitive, but it’s definitely worth a shot for you! Best of luck!

Thanks for the chance and advice! Just a couple of questions: should I apply early action? I’ve heard different pros and cons about it. And is it tough to fit in if you’re OOS? Especially on this website, I’ve read that some people think it’s a big problem. Thanks again

I applied early action, and I think it helped me. There were five (that I know of) from my school that applied to UNC-CH. Three of us applied early and all got in. The other two applied regular and got denied. (Granted, us group of three were the most qualified of the five, but who knows? Maybe they decided they had already accepted enough from our school by the time regular admits submitted.)

Bottom line, apply early if you can finish your app on time without feeling rushed. If you finish with everything and feel comfortable to submit it early, do it. You’re just wasting your time to sit around and mull about it until the later date. Anyways, you still stand a chance of being moved on to the second-round admits.

Not sure about the whole OOS fitting in thing, but I think the general rule for college is that it is what you make of it. (Have you visited the campus before?) If you haven’t, there’s a LOT of school pride at UNC, so it’s not hard to fit in from that standpoint.

^ Thanks for the help! Looks like I’ll definitely apply EA. And yup, that school pride is one of the big reasons why UNC seems so great

Haha okay last bump for awhile
