Hi,
I’m a junior in NC and UNC-CH is my dream school, and I want to know what my chances are right now so I can plan ahead.
My stats are:
Race: Asian
SAT: 1480 (790 math 690 reading/writing) essay: 23 (planning on retaking)
GPA (fresh+soph): 4.5 (max 5)
After junior and senior year, I think my GPA would be like 4.6 or 4.7
AP Classes I’ve taken/am taking:
AP Psychology, AP Spanish, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus AB, AP Environmental, AP Language
APs I plan to take senior year: AP Stats, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, AP Literature, AP Computer Science
I think I will be top 30% in my class.
Extracurriculars:
President of 3 clubs (1 science club, 2 volunteering clubs), Secretary of a Spanish Club
I will have ~100 hours of volunteering by the end summer before senior year.
I have played tennis since I was 6, but it was on/off so I don’t have any significant awards for it.
I have played the oboe since I was 10, and I have a lot of awards for it, including governor’s school, international competition and local awards, honor bands, etc. I also participate in several orchestral groups
I am doing an internship at UNC-G, where I am doing some stem cell research
Where can I improve? What do you think my chances are right now? Any advice would help. Thanks so much
Also: My SAT subject test scores are 800 in math 2 and 800 in chinese
UNC has a lot more women than men, meaning you are a lot more likely to get in if you are a man. If you are a man I would say high match if you are a woman I would say reach.
In order to improve you need to improve your rank. According to UNC’s website,
1st in high-school class 8% (of those whose schools reported rank)
1st or 2nd in high-school class 14%
Top 10% of high-school class 78%

Also, being from NC will definitely help.
If you could move into top 20-15% of your class that would increase your chances alot.

I got in to UNC-CH last year with similar stats as an OOS (people say out of state is way harder since they cap OOS percentage at 18% of total class, but I’m not sure if that is true). From my experience, the decision is very much based off of essays and letters of rec (given that you don’t lack in the stats department). UNC-CH was and still is my dream school as well since I plan on going into pharmacy(UNC’s pharmacy program is #1 in the nation!!!), but took up a full-ride to my home-state university since I don’t want to be in debt and I don’t want my parents paying 40,000 a year for my undergrad when grad matters more. Good luck in your college finding process.
I have always heard that a lot depends on what county you live in, as UNC tries to promote geographic diversity from within the state. High performing kids from Wake and Mecklenburg are going to have a harder time getting in than someone with lower stats from Allegheny, Scotland, Jones (etc.) counties.
