I am 11/420 in the top 70 high schools in Texas so I am automatically admitted to UT. But I want to do CS for sure because I fell in love with it this year. Here is my app:
SAT: math-640 writing-640 critical reading-630 (SAT not good so I’m taking ACT in june and prospect score from previous in school practice is a 32)
ECs: varsity theatre, ITS (international thespian society) chapter president, NHS, 200+ community service hours, been in 9 plays as a lead in 6, speech and debate (prose and duet), UIL CS team, and I am part of NFL (national forensics league)
Awards: district champs UIL One Act Play 2015, TFA duet nat qual, ITS group acting nat qual, certified in ms word and PowerPoint (took official tests)
Academics: UW:3.977 W:3.911
I am In all AP and preAP classes plus theatre. I have taken AP bio, AP world, AP physics I, AP USH, AP chem, AP English III. My senior course load is: AP Physics C, AP CS, AP English IV, AP Calc AB, AP Gov/Econ, Speech and debate, varsity theatre, computer languages. I will have taken (when i graduate) 3 CS classes including preAP and AP CS and a class called computer languages. Two for Java and one for C++. Thus, I am decent with java and will be aquainted with C++ by the time I graduate.
So, what are my chances? Am I a good canidate for UT CS?
I’d say you have a good chance, if you can get your SAT/ACT score up (32 would be good, a little higher even better). Check out CNS’s academic index formula - it includes class rank and the math and english/writing (but not reading; go figure) parts of either the SAT or ACT (they’ll use the score that helps you most). Your class rank and course rigor are excellent, and your CS classes/activities will help. If you have As in your math, physics, and CS classes, that will help. Write strong essays, and write one about your CS experiences and what you love about CS. And have a plan B, because CS seems tougher to get into every year.
I was recently told by a UTCS student, which my counselor put me in touch with, that he doesn’t see why I wouldn’t get in. So I guess I have a good enough resume.
