What are my chances at Wesleyan?

I'm a high school junior who's been dying to go to Wesleyan for years, and wondering what my chances are.

I'm a caucasian female from a private school in suburban Massachusetts.

I'm incredibly passionate and driven about theatre, my priority art form. I'm aware that I want to go into Wesleyan majoring in theatre and taking advantage of all the opportunities the school offers. I'm also very liberal-minded, which fits in with the atmosphere of the school.

GPA: 3.5. I go to a school that is solidly anti-competition, so my GPA could not be higher than a 4.0 at best. There are also no class ranks or chances for academic awards.

SAT: 2120 (740 CR, 740 Wr, 640 math)

EC'S: Every theatre production my school has offered, almost all of which I've had starring roles in. Also, community theatre, where I've also done well.
Directed two shows at school, set to direct two more by the time I graduate.
Written a show that was performed at my school.
Acting and improv courses and training since freshman year
Private voice lessons since freshman year
Jazz, tap, modern, and lyrical dance training since freshman year.
I've been in my school's a capella group since freshman year and am set to run the group next year.
Writer and editor for my school's literary magazine
Vice president of my school's Feminist Coalition
Volunteer at a local community theatre- I teach improv to young children, usher shows, answer phones, and the like.
I also volunteer at a local women's legal center.
Participate in writing classes at a writing center in Boston, and have had things published in their literary magazine.
Two prior summer theatre intensives at Brown and Berklee College of Music. Planning to do another this summer at USC, which offers college credit.

I have some great people to write me letters of recommendation, and my dad is good friends with a member of the Board of Trustees.

I truly would love to go to Wesleyan, so what do my chances look like?

Wesleyan: Reach

Try BU, SUNY Purchase as non-reach schools… since you want to do theater.

Bump.

Bump.

Ok, I have a good comparison for you.
My son got in four years ago.
He had a somewhat higher GPA than you (from a private school as well), and comparable ECs (music rather than theatre-based, but comparable). He was also the captain of a varsity sport (albiet one Wesleyan does not compete in, so it was not like he was going to be an athletic recruit).

He had 70 points higher in total SATs.

He was also male, which makes it a bit easier for Wes (they get quite a few more female applicants).

Also, he applied ED, and was waitlisted and eventually accepted in May. So one can probably conclude he just-barely got in.

Also, this was four years ago, and things have only gotten tougher.

Based on the above, I’d say it’s going to be tough, but not impossible for you. Applying ED will help, also make sure you have an interview, etc.

Best of luck!

To provide further information: brought my SAT scores up to a superscored 2160. First crack at the ACT earned me a 31, and I’m studying with hopes to retake it for at least a 32. Would submitting my ACT’s help me?

@demonofmusic your SAT is a bit higher than a 31 act so submit the sat. I’d say wesleyan is a low reach for you, but your ECs following what you want to do is super great!

Read the Gatekeepers. It will let you know what they are looking for. It’s kinda old, but you can just look at what they talk about in the book and increase the stats. The GPA you have is kinda low for Weslyan.

I agree that Wesleyan will be a reach for you. D was waitlisted last year with a higher GPA (top 3% of her class), 2130 SAT, President of Nat. Honor Society, award winning writer and musician. Not sure what being SAT test optional now means for admission (probably more options in terms of diversifying the class.)

One thing it does mean, is that that unless you have stellar scores, don’t send them in. I’m guessing that for Wes that means most applicants who score anything under a 2150 or so will not submit. So if you do submit, you’re competing in some pretty rarified air.

On the flip side, if you don’t submit… you had better have a very, very good story (top of class, deep ECs, etc.)

Great, I appreciate the information. Also, I am definitely applying ED, which I’m aware will help my chances. By how much, I still don’t know.
