What are my chances at West Point?

Hi everyone, this is my very first post, so please bear with me!

I am a sophomore in high school, but i don't actually attend a HS. I have attended my local community college since the spring semester of 8th grade, having been previously homeschooled. I am an all A's student. I am taking college algebra, HS senior-level writing, and 4th year spanish. I will recieve my associate of science when I would normally graduate from HS. I'm planning on taking American History, Calculus I or II, philosophy, psychology, humanities, 2 more writing classes, economics, and Chemistry before I graduate. I have not yet taken the SAT or ACT but am planning to soon.

My normal physical activities include running, Little-league softball for the last 9 years, lifting weights, and some swimming. However, I recently had shoulder surgery (glenohumeral ligament re-attachment) and so am unable to do much of anything right now. I should be back to top condition in October of my junior year, and the doctor says that I should be fine to do push-ups, pull-ups, etc. But will WP look down on that kind of surgery and write me off?

My "leadership extracurriculers" are mostly focused on Police Explorers, which is sort of a JROTC for swat/cops. Is that sufficent? I know the army isn't much like swat, but I was explaining some of our swat training to my brother (who just graduated from WP) and he said that some of the training sounded a lot like some of the stuff he did at WP. So is there anyone else out there that has anything to say about Explorers? There is plenty of opportunity for rank advancement, I just joined so I'm still just Explorer rank. However I can proceed up to Corporal, then Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain. I don't think I have enough time before college to go all the way up to Captain, but I'm definitely planning on going up to Lieutenant. Also, as a side note, I have the opportunity to become the President of my St. Vincent DePaul Youth Group; we do a lot of volunteering with the poor in my city. Also I have a lot of volunteer hours with the Explorers, doing things like security at large events around town, crowd control, point control, etc.

So please, anyone with any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Your brother will give you the best feedback… however, you should know your application will be scored on four areas, each of about equal emphasis:

Academic Accomplishment

Leadership Accomplishments

Athletic/Fitness Accomplishments

Clarity of demostrated desire to serve as an Army Officer

Of these four, the one that might be more important than the other three is Leadership.

Oh, and nowadays it helps a lot to be a diversity candidate… I hope you are.

This forum is very helpful. Good luck to you

Thanks DunninLA. Yes, my brother told me as much about needing leadership experience. And amazingly enough, I am half-hispanic! Will the ‘half’ matter? Or do they just want “technically” diverse students? Technically meaning it’s in the DNA…
