Colleges I'm Applying To
Caltech
MIT
Upenn
Brown
Johns Hopkins
Stanford
Emory (in state)
GAtech (in state; early action)

What are my chances?
Please also consider my chances if my essays are a) Crappy, b) Okay, or c) Amazing!
Thanks for reading :) I'm very new to all this college thing >___>;

Your cr SAT score will abolish your chances to Stanford, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Brown dramatically!

Caltech: REJECT
MIT: REJECT
Upenn: REJECT
Brown: REJECT
Johns Hopkins: REJECT
Stanford: REJECT
Emory (in state): Unlikely
GAtech (in state; early action): In

Agree with gaffee; you're shooting way to high. have a few HIGH reaches, but don't go overboard. GTECH is good. The rest of your colleges are risky. Worst case scenario you get rejected at even GTech and have nowhere to go. (not entirely inplausible). Have a few match schools on there. I'd reccomend UVA, some of the UCs, but it depends on what you're going into.

Caltech - Nope.
MIT - Nope.
Upenn - Nope.
Brown - Nope.
Johns Hopkins - Nope.
Stanford - Nope.
Emory (in state) - Nope. (instate probably won't help)
GAtech (in state; early action) - Yes

I don't recommend UVA, it's probably not going to help that you're out-of-state. But I think you should consider some UCs, and also places like UNC, Michigan, Wisconsin... etc.

Some public schools might be viable choices for you, but with your SAT scores and lack of ECs, Ivies are out of the question. You need to boost your SATs by a 100 or more.

I think if you can get that SAT up you have a slight chance for most of these.
Or maybe even consider the ACT. Your AP scores

You're in tech easy, and all the other schools depend on your sat score. Which I know you can raise.

Those ECs are killing you!
Do something!

reject at all ivies and top tier schools (stanford, Mit, caltech, johns, etc.).

What are u guys basing your decisions on?

I applied to colleges as an asian male with SAT scores as such :

610V, 800M, 670W which are not that far off of the OPs, and I was accepted into notably Harvey Mudd College (twice btw), University of Chicago and Cornell (MIT reject tho). Or am I missing the point and his GPA is really bad or something? Granted the OP listed some very high colleges, instantly labelling him rejected seems a bit out of key. Also, I remember an Asian Male with similar SAT scores (1980 sum though ) that got into MIT this past year.

Other colleges the OP might want to look into:
Carnegie Mellon
Cornell
Northwestern (reaches still, but more likely)

Also, if u got a 5 on the APUSH exam, take the SATII lazy, it could only help.

i agree with seiken
i have known a handful of people who get into these level colleges with a record not that different than mine
where are you basing all these conclusions from?
i'm sure however "bad" my sat scores might seem to be, i'm sure it's not my only determining factor

you've participated in only 2 clubs throughout high school and you never mentioned any sort of leadership position. your lack of ECs is what I think will get you rejected from a lot of the colleges on your list...you don't appear to be particularly interested or passionate about anything...

@ Seiken: You don't have any ECs? You only mentioned your academics.

@OP: You can be optimistic, but you might just end up with a stack of rejection letters from everywhere except Georgia Tech.

my ECs were Rubik's Cube, chess, soccer, and I believe I mentioned World of Warcraft on my original harvey mudd application. At the time of frosh applications I had just started doing my biophysics research so I really did not have anything to show for it. I dont play an instrument and I dont really do community service.

@ Seiken: it gets harder to get in each year as applicants become smart at applying :O You were one of the lucky ones that scrapped in.

@OP: Gaffe's right.

Dude. You need more EC's. OR just expand a ton on the current ones. And. SAT.

*You might want to try the ACT

Those schools are difficult but not impossible...maybe you don't have the greatest shot, but you should apply if you're interested in them...don't believe anyone who says you have NO shot.

I, for one, am not implying that he has no shot. I'm just saying that to have a good shot at these schools, he definitely needs better SAT's (or a good ACT) and some expansion on those EC's. Provided that happens, he'll be competent.

That is so not true. MIT does not care as much as other colleges do about CR especially if he is an immigrant so quit putting this guy down and accomplish what he has.

Do you work at any of these schools admissions offices? No
For all you know he could have a brilliant essay about his hardships moving countries and being an immigrant.

If you do not have a Green Card (Permanent Residency), then it will be much harder. If you are in the process of applying for one, then contact each college and see if you could potentially be reviewed as a domestic candidate.
