Don’t really know what else to put. I want to get a BBA, but I know AFROTC wants tech majors. How bad will my major hurt everything else? Also, the school I am shooting for is University of Michigan, which is in-state for me so I guess I’m looking for a Type 7 scholarship.
Hey there! Not sure what I can offer in terms of firsthand experience, but I attended USAFA’s summer seminar and a pretty extensive ROTC briefing there so I can let you know what I know.
You and I are pretty similar in terms of qualifications, I got a 33 ACT composite (35 Eng, 35 Reading, 33 Math, 30 Science) and a 4.0 GPA, I’m on the varsity tennis and bowling teams and I’m State Champion in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. I also have won some awards in band. I’m a little behind in terms of physical fitness, but I’m training hard to get there because I’m in the same boat as you, I want to major in History or PoliSci.
I know about 5% of their scholarships are Type 1, 10% are Type 2, and the rest are Type 7.
I also have some info stating that the average ACT score for a Type 1 is 31.75-- for a Type 7 it’s 27.72. However, you can’t request to be considered for a certain type of scholarship which puts you in the fairly unique situation of being overqualified for a less valuable scholarship.
That said, I think you’ve got a really good chance. Your major might have put you at a disadvantage for Type 1 scholarships, but might set you back just enough to qualify you for the scholarship you want. Also, if you put down the University of Michigan on your application, they’ll know that that will be sufficient to cover what they feel you deserve.
So overall, I think you’re in good shape! Good luck!
