Hi all, I'm a 19 year old community college student and I'm embarrassed to admit it, but my math skills are a bit rusty. The highest math I've completed is stats.

Anyway here's a list of my classes so far that are actually transferable according to assist.
CO SCI 201 - INTRO TO COMPUTER SCIENCE
CO SCI 208 - VISUAL BASIC PROGRAMMING
CO SCI 243 - INTRO TO C++
CO SCI 290 - INTRO TO JAVA PROGRAMMING
CO SCI 840 - OBJECT ORIENTED C++
CO SCI 836 - DATA STRUCTURES
MATH 227 - STATISTICS
ENGLISH 101 - COLLEGE READING AND COMPOSITION 1
ENGLISH 103 - COMPOSITION AND CRITICAL THINKING
ENGLISH 207 - AMERICAN LITERATURE I
HISTORY 12 - SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE US II
ADM JUS 1 - INTRO TO ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE
SPANISH I - ELEMENTARY SPANISH
PHILOSOPHY 9 - SYMBOLIC LOGIC

So far, I have 45 units and I plan to take the remaining 15 during the spring semester. My dream major is linguistics with computer science (as I have a fascination for not only language, but computers). However, I wasn't able to enroll in a Spanish II course as they were all full; I'm going to try and add one on the first day of classes, but I'm expecting the worst. Do you think I have a chance? I know my sole math course isn't calculus, so I'm pretty sure that's going to hurt my chances as well. The only positive thing I can say is that I currently have a 4.0, but that's about it.

I don’t mind if you guys are brutal. I’m just curious to know if I have even a tiny chance of getting in. I can provide additional info if it would help you chance me =)

Hi, I don’t really believe UCLA would find my GPA all that impressive because I didn’t really take “tough” courses like calculus or physics. I applied as a “linguistics with computer science” major.

I believe I need a math course called discrete structures that I won’t be able to take as calc is apparently a pre-requisite for it (and I don’t think I’ve seen many community colleges in the area that seem to offer it anyway). I also need another semester of language, but I’m not expecting that either. So, I’m not really sure if UCLA would even consider me.

Hmm, after looking at the number of people that actually applied for the major in 2013 (it said only 9 applied and 4 were accepted). The average GPA was something like 3.58 if I’m remembering correctly, so does that mean my chances are even worse than I fear?

Major preps and GPA are most important for transfers in general. I think the selection process is that they choose applicants who [will have] finished their preps in time THEN check the GPA and performance and then extra stuffs like ECs, awards, … Therefore your superb GPA won’t really matter if you lack preps.
Discrete Math is very important for computer science major. So I think your chance is … pretty low. But let’s hope that I’m wrong. Besides, predicting your chances is pointless if you have already submitted the application. Worrying about it will only stress you.

Yeah, I figured my lack of math would hurt me. I had a tough time finding an intro to linguistics course as well. The only linguistics course I found wasn’t even UC transferable, so I didn’t really want to take it in the spring.

oh neat. I’m applying to that major as well.

You have a good shot I think mostly because of so much Comp Sci courses. However, I think the fact that you’re missing the 3 math courses you need (two semesters of calc and discrete math) and the language requirements will affect your chances. Don’t know why you went the stats route and not the precalc and then calc route. Don’t worry about the intro to linguistics course. Every Linguistics major has to take Linguistics 20 at UCLA and there is no equivalent course at any CCC. The undergraduate advisor at the Linguistics said as much in an e-mail I sent asking a question regarding that intro course.

I recall reading on here as well that one would be hard pressed to find an intro to linguistics course that matched UCLA’s. I know that I messed up with the math. I was admittedly a bit worried that I’d do bad in calc, so I went for a transferable math course that I knew I’d have no problems with. I have no clue if the symbolic logic course I took would be comparable to the one that’s required, but I know two of my co sci courses are apparently equivalent to co sci 31 and co sci 32, so I hope that helps me a little.

I think the opposite is actually the case for the major I’m after. Only 9 people attempted to transfer into it according to the latest transfer rates on UCLA’s site. I don’t know if that helps or hurts.
