What are my chances for an appeal?

Damn I got rejected to BU for engineering. My stats are pretty good. I felt my SAT’s were my strongest points.

GPA: 2.9/4.5
Rank: 63/356
SAT: 1170 math:540 verbal:630
SAT II: writing:550, math1c:600, US history: 630
Essay: average essay
EC: tennis, chess club

And I’m taking ALOT of challenging classes this year.

English 12, CP
Intro. to Calculus, CP
Justice and Gov. , CP
Physics I, CP
Computer Programming II Honors (probably fail this class this year)
Internet research CP (1/2 year)
Microsoft Excel CP (1/2 year)

So what are my chances for an appeal?

BTW, and does failing one class (computer programming II honors) matter because its just an elective? Or should I try to pass the class?

thanks

Please excuse my naivety, but what is an appeal? Can you really ask for a second analysis of your stats?

You could try, you never know what will happen.

While your SATs are decent, they're not in BU's 'average' range. Your unweighted GPA is kinda low, too. Does your school offer APs and a lot of honors? I don't think colleges generally look at a mainly CP schedule as challenging.

Sorry if that came off as rude...I didn't mean for it to be.

Good luck!

How does one go about appealing a decision? I too was rejected from the General Studies Program at BU. My stats were:

SAT: 1390 (690 V, 700 M)

GPA: 2.56 unweighted (although there is a definite uptrend in my grades (3.86 first 2 quarters senior year, grades improve throughout junior year))

EC: Heavily involved in music (Marching/Symphonic band, Jazz ensemble, garage band(s), guitar lessons, etc.), Ultimate Frisbee, rec. soccer

Senior year I am taking:
AP Calc BC
AP European History
AP Physics
Marching/Symphonic Band
Psychology
English 12 Honors
Computer Science 1

BU was my top choice, so I was disappointed when I didn't get in. Is there still a possibility of a second chance for me? How do I appeal my decision? Thanks in advance for your responses!

Gosh its hard to believe with those stats that you didn't get into CGS. This is a serious topic so you should get advice directly from the Admisiions office. Call, write, tell them you will come if offered a spot. Have your GC call and find out and when you and your GC call/write remind them of your SAT scores. Highlight your latest GPA since that is your weak point and I heard appeals work if they are based on new info.

For the original poster - I doubt an appeal would be successful. I don't want to sound like a naysayer, but those classes you are taking this year are unfortunately on a lower level for students going to BU. While they may be challenging for you, they don't look too good on an application, especially for appeal. Most students are taking full out calculus AP (either AB or BC) or at least honors calculus - I wouldn't even know what "intro to calc" would encompass? Hughes-Hallett only (shudders) problems?? English 12 CP is nothing special because almost all highschools require 4 years of english, justice and gov. is a pretty neat elective, but an AP gov class would look better as one, computer programming honors would be excellent, but you said you're going to fail it, which is downright horrid when it comes to college; im sure you could have found a more challenging class than microsoft excel (i dont want to downplay the effectiveness of learning neat tricks with that program, but im sure there are tons of tutorial websites out there that can teach you the same things and would free up a spot for a more challenging class).

Also, to be honest a 540 SAT math score for an intended engineering major is just unacceptable. I don't want to diminish my twin brother's accomplishments, but he plans to major in graphic design (there is more math than you would think, but not engineering type math) at BU and he got a 580 on his math SAT. Also, your ECs are very weak for a person who wants to have a career in a math and science based field - where are those types of ECs? Sorry if I'm being harsh but I'm just telling my most honest opinion.

Second appeal - I think you have a decent shot, but you MUST tell why your gpa is so low. If you had a 3.86 the first semester of senior year and high junior grades, then what were you doing during the underclassmen years of HS to bring it so down?? Your SAT is top 75% for class profile of 2008 (for comparison) so your GPA is your achilles heal. I would try an appeal.
