what are my chances for columbia?

freshman gpa- 92
took all 3 honors classes offered- honors english, honors alg 2, and honors foreign language (science and history weren't tracked)

sophomore gpa so far- 94
am taking all 5 honors classes offered- honors chem, honors english, honors precalculus, honors foreign language, and honors govt (there are no AP classes offered to sophomores, but i plan to take all APs offered next year)

school doesnt rank bc there are only 69 people in the student body

i estimate to get at least a 2050 on my SATs
i plan to take 3 SAT subject tests- Chem, Math 1, and Hebrew Language

P.S. i go to a very small, private religious high school and end school at 5:00 pm each day, so i also take 4 religious classes per day (which i also get A's/A-'s on)

leadership: president and founder of social action club in school this year

extracurricluar activities: creative writing, write for school litmag and school newspaper, submit to contests and other writing websites; drama club in school both this year and last year, will hopefully continue thru the end of high school and will get 2 credits for it on my transcript by the time i graduate from high school, hip hop club this year, litmag committee this year, student ambassador committee last year, art club last year,

community service: school requires 15 hours per year, which i am currently on par with

i am a non-legacy
i am white
i am a non-first generational college student (my parents came here from russia a few years before i was born so they went to college in russia, but i guess it still counts as me not being a first generation college student, even though im the first one to go to college in america in my family)

anyone???

2050 isn’t enough, not for Columbia you’re gonna need a 2200+
being white doesn’t help either but ur ecs are decent so study for those SATS/ACTs

thank you…what about my gpa? is it good enough for Columbia?

2050? C’mon man it’s 2300 for Columbia and even then it’s a stretch. All AP’s next year is good but you must get A’s in them, and especially so of the ones that are needed in your intended field of study.

thanks…what do others think?

i agree with the previous posters, you’re going to need to bring up your SAT by at least 150.
take all the AP’s but make sure you can get grades in those classes that will help up your GPA. (if you get B’s or C’s you mine as well just take an easier class and get A’s)

Columbia’s hard to say, as are any Ivy League schools. I know of 3.2 UW GPA, 2000 SAT, high number of ECs who got in, while a 3.9 UW, 2290 SAT, less ECs got deferred (this was this year’s ED). Both were Asian males for engineering.

Of course, you can always retake the SAT to up your scores and your chances, but keep in mind, anything can happen (just pray and hope!). :)

honestly, your chances are slim. if you can somehow do really really well on those sats, and bring your gpa way up…maybe. but i wouldn’t get your hopes up :/

thanks…
what do others of you on CC think?

buummmpppp

Your chances aren’t great, but then, nobody’s are. If your GPA is in the 3.9-4.0 range (on a 4.0 scale, unweighted), you’ve taken as rigorous a curriculum as is possible, and you’ve shown dedication to at least one field outside of academics (do you like social action? Get involved in the community, make a difference!), you’ve got as good a shot as anybody, test scores aside. Here, I would recommend preparing with Silver Turtle’s methods for the SAT and giving it your best go. Also, ignore anyone who says you need a 2300 or above to have a shot at any college; just look at their CDSs or at USNews and you’ll see that Columbia’s 25th percentile is 2080. That means that, yes, a quarter of their freshman class had a 2080 SAT or below. Many of these folks were hooked, yes, but what that should tell you is that if you do well enough, you’ve got a shot. This all being said, the sky’s the limit on the SAT; don’t make your expectation a 2080, or you’re stone-cold screwed. Aim above a 2300. Still, ignore comatthew6 and his ilk.
