I am currently a Junior in high school (class of 2014) and aspire to be a chemical engineer at the University of Minnesota. I understand that the UofM's chemE program is one of the best in the nation and that is why I'm curious to see if I would get accepted and what kind of scholarships I could possibly receive.

Credentials:
Minnesota resident
GPA: 4.079/4.33 weighted, 4.0/4.0 unweighted
Class Rank: 2 of 410
Class difficulty: 7 APs, 3 CIS (basically APs), and 2 honors (includes senior year)
ACT: 32 (33 superscored)
ECs: Nothing special here, currently employed at a clothing store, youth group member (religion), Link leader, and will join Spanish club next year. Aside from that just some volunteer hours and miscellaneous high school awards that don't seem too important.

So how does my "resume" look right now? And what could I do to improve it? I'm taking the ACT for my 3rd and final time and June and am hoping for a 33, which should be attainable since I was one subscore point away last time and I went up 11 subscores pts the first time. Also what other extracurriculars can I do to boost my resume?

Thanks

OnMyGrind…It looks to me like you’re positioned pretty well for admission into CSE. If you haven’t seen it, here’s a link to the profile of admitted students from last fall.

[Academic Profile](Academic Profile of Fall 2022 Admitted Freshman Applicants by College | Office of Admissions)

Your HS class rank and ACT score match up extremely well with the profile. 88% of CSE admits had ACT scores in the 28-36 range and the average score was 30.6. Your 32 puts you solidly above that average and if you’re able to bring it up to a 33 you’ll be that much better off.

Regarding scholarships, here’s a link to the university wide scholarships available if you haven’t seen that yet.

With your class rank, it looks like you’re definitely eligible for the Maroon and Gold Leadership scholarship ($12K per year). Your stats are also competitive for some possible additional money from Presidential, Bentson, and a few others. Honors invites are done by the individual college, but I’d guess you’ll be competitive for that as well if the program interests you.

Your ECs are fine IMO. I certainly wouldn’t recommend starting any new ones just for the sake of your resume, but if there’s something that interests you go ahead and give it a shot.

Congrats on a great HS career so far, and Good Luck in your college search. UMinn is a fantastic school, and I think you’ll be a great fit if you choose to attend.

I agree with Wolverine, but I think it is worth highlighting the fact that the [University-Wide Scholarships](University-Wide Academic Scholarships | Office of Admissions) are very competitive … not guaranteed. I believe that there are only a handful of the “Maroon and Gold Leadership” awards handed out each year.

I had very similar stats and got in without much trouble. Can’t say much about scholarships, though.

Yeah, honestly I’m not expecting too much for scholarships. It would be awesome if I could get the Maroon and Gold Leadership scholarship (12000 each yr for 4 yrs) but I’m definitely not expecting to get that one. I’d be ecstatic with just getting the 6500/yr for 4 yrs scholarship. Either way the chemical engineering program is top 3-5 in the nation and costs about half as much (for me, a MN resident) as the other ones near the top.

The engineering school gives out scholarships so you might qualify for one of those.
