I am a high school senior and I really want to go to Dartmouth College. I applied Early Decision to the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and was deferred. I suppose there is still a possibility that I will be accepted during the Regular Decision process, but I would rather go to Dartmouth. My credentials are as follow:

Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.77
SAT: 2260 (Math:800, CR:710, Writing:750)
SAT2: Math II-800, US History-800

My AP Courses (with scores for ones I've already completed) are:

AP Human Geography-5
AP US Gov. and Politics-5
AP BC Calculus-5
AP US History-5
AP World History-5
AP English Language-5
AP Music Theory
AP French
AP Economics
AP English Literature
AP Physics

As far as extracurriculars go, I am co-captain of my school's academic/quizbowl team, I am co-captain of my school's mock trial team, and I am very active in the instrumental music program (saxophone for pit orchestra in many school shows)

As for honor societies:
Mu Alpha Theta (math)
English Honor Society
French Honor Society
Science Honor Society
Music Honor Society

I have no sort of legacy or minority status. Everything considered, can I get into Dartmouth? Please for the love of god say yes. And considering I got deferred from Wharton, what might my chances be with that?

Getting into Wharton and getting into Dartmouth require basically the same things. At both, your CR score is sub par. Your ECs are below average for an ivy and you don’t tell us your rank, rigor or strength of school.

Nothing you’ve put here says Dartmouth admit.

Coming from a Dartmouth ED admit this year, I think your chances are good, not great. Your ECs sound a bit lackluster, unless there are things you aren’t telling us. Your grades are obviously good, but so are everyone else’s. Your SAT is average, nothing special. Your SAT IIs are definitely good. Unless you have no major hooks (URM, First Gen., Recruit), then your chances remain pretty much average. Just as good as any other strong applicant, but no better. Hopefully everything works out with Wharton for you!

I think the thing everyone needs to keep in mind is that ED is typically a very good read on what will happen in the RD unless some variable changes. Schools like Dartmouth and Penn are looking for pretty much the same thing.

There’s a significant advantage at Penn in the ED round. In general, students that Penn passed on ED will not get onto Dartmouth RD.

I advise the OP to change a variable if possible. If the was a SAT retake and he did better, it will help. Send Dartmouth different essay.

The bottom line now is the 710 is an issue and the ECs as listed here don’t say ivy, so anything that can help those two factors gets the OP more into the game.

From what I see, you have a pretty great chance. I had two friends get into DM this year. Their unweighted GPA’s were 3.9~ while their weighted was 4.2~. Their SAT I’s were 1860 and 1910, while their SAT II’s were around the 650 area. One of them didn’t even have ANY EC’s except for Science Olympiad. Though, they were both URM’s and the 1860 one was accepted through Questbridge.

Guys come on I heard once your SAT gets above a 2220 or 2250, it makes little difference. I have a 2260. I don’t exactly think that makes me a weak applicant. As far as class rank goes, my school does not do that. However, my courseload throughout high school is very rigorous because I have taken numerous AP’s, and when they were not available I took honors courses. Throughout all of high school I never took a regular course. And you also mentioned my extracurriculars are weak…but what exactly does that even mean? I have leadership positions in 2 serious academic teams that are both extreme time commitments. Care to explain??

And I wasn’t sure if a summer job counted as an EC so I didn’t include in my original post the fact that I have worked as a camp counselor for the past 2 summers at a day camp for both normally developing children and mentally/physically challenged children

I got into Dartmouth rd with no hooks last year, a lower CR score, and a lower overall SAT score. So I think your score is fine. I do agree that your chances are average, however, because your ECs are sort of weak. The leadership positions on the teams are good, but those are very typical ECs that won’t stand out unless your teams have won state/completed at nationals, etc. The summer job is good, but again nothing out of the ordinary.

I would rewrite your essays to make sure they are very unique. And I know people who got deferred or rejected ed at other ivies and accepted Dartmouth rd so it happens.
