Hello, I am a rising senior and I just wanted to get some feedback as to my chances at Georgetown University. Here are some facts about me. I currently have a 3.9 GPA (which might go up soon on behalf on my AP classes), and I am in the top 13% of my class. I am in the National Honors Society, The Society of High School Scholars, Marching Band, SGA, and I was the leader of my school’s International Club and am the current leader of Creative Writing. I volunteer in my town’s Art Council, Historical Society, and a local Girl Scout Group. I have taken 3 AP classes, and I plan on taking 3 more next year alongside dual enrollment. I also speak advanced Spanish and plan on doing an independent study of French next year. My SAT scores right now aren’t very good, but if I am able to score a 1900-2000 on the SAT, what would my chances be? P.S. I live in Maryland and am a first generation college girl hoping to majoring in International Politics. Thank you!
You definitely want your SAT to be 2000+, preferably 2100+ to be safe. I think anything less than 2000 is too low, not that there aren’t people with those scores, there are just much less of them. Your GPA could be higher but other than that I think you really need to work hard on your essays; get advice and help from your teachers–they’re invaluable in that regard.
Okay, thanks!
Oh, and I just realized that I meant to write that my unweighted GPA is 3.96 as of the end of my junior year, while my weighted is 4.50. Also, another concern; I need to retake my SATs because I’m not satisfied with the scores, but I also need to take my Subject Tests. Which subjects tests should I strive for if I want to be in SFS. I’ve taken AP America and AP World and scored 4 in both, so I’m okay for those two. And I wanted to do the EA, but since it’s due Nov. 1st and I can’t take subject tests and an SAT on the same day, should I consider doing regular decision? Of course, my fear is having too low of stats to be accepted.
Georgetown says applying EA provides no admission advantage, unlike what you hear about ED schools. If you have a language that is strong enough, you could take a SAT 2 language. Also History or Lit might be good. Maybe a math if you can do well.
Okay, I decided to sign up for the ACT in September and take the SAT subject tests in October. Unfortunately, math is not my strong point, so I might pass on taking that subject test. I will take the literature and history one, however (since I’m already taking the classes). I’m still deciding on the 3rd one. Is there a certain score I should strive for on the ACT for GU?
I would say a 31+ on the ACT, but better to get a 32+. The students who have been accepted in our competitive public high school have had 32 + ACTs and 2150+ single sitting SATs.
Okay, I have another question now. As I mentioned before, I would like to apply for EA at Georgetown. However, I will not be able to take my 2-3 SAT subject tests until November or December. I think everything else (aside from my ACT, which I plan to take this Saturday) is alright; I have a 3.96 unweighted GPA, 5.0 weighted, taking a multitude of AP classes with my only regular classes being Physics, and a dual enrollment class in spring. Everything else matches the previous description above. My point is, should I do the EA and then when I receive my scores, send them in, or should I do RD so my scores with be with my application? Has anyone gotten in without subject tests?
