3.3 weighted GPA with 6 AP classes and a college art history class. I got a 4.2 gpa in my junior year and I'm doing similarly well in my senior year. I retook five of the classes I got C's and D's in from 9th and 10th grade. I have one C left from 10th grade math and I'm retaking that class currently, but it may not show up on my transcript.

-volunteered since 9th grade at a library on most days after school from 4-5.
-made two 10 minute historical documentaries in 10th and 11th grade which both won first place at a state competition for high school students. There were about 50 other documentaries in my category.
-made 3 min. advertisements for upcoming films at a film series program every month for a year and a half.
-won the congressional art competition for a painting.
-worked at an art camp for elementary school kids teaching stop-motion animation for two months.
-chess club president since 10th grade, astronomy club member in 9th and 10th grade.
-won the state's polgar chess tournament for three years in a row.
-one of the top 5 chess players under eighteen in the state.

Do I have any chance with my terrible GPA? :/

thanks matty. I’m just worried that they’ll see my terrible math SAT score and below average GPA before they see my 800. I’ve send my midyear report (straight A’s), but I’m not sure if they count those grades into their GPA calculations. Do you know if they do? How much will my senior year grades count?
Also, I’m applying to the film program and I’m really worried about my video submission. It’s slightly over the 5 minute limit- probably around 5:20- and it’s not good quality at all. How much do they care about portfolios?

Emerson doesn’t really give a **** about math. Most people can test out of it, I wouldn’t worry too much. Your reading SAT is great, and your GPA may be a little low so just make sure your essays kick ass. Senior year grades count somewhat, because Emerson asks to see both first and second quarter grades. Just make sure that you do as well as possible to maintain or raise your GPA.

But, did you not apply early? If you’re applying for Film Production or Directing, I think you needed to have applied by Nov. 1st. You may need to pick another major if you didn’t apply early.

I am also very interested in Emerson. I am only a Sophomore in high school, but I am in a prestigious magnet school for theater, and do about 3 shows a year. I believe that my top Sat scores will be around probably a 600 on reading, 700 on verbal and 550ish on math. My gpa right now is unweighted around a 3.4. I would b majoring in theater and have maintained an A throughout all 3 semesters of high school so far. I plan on keeping about a 3.4 GPA and taking maybe 3 or 4 AP courses. The rest advanced. If I maintained my 3.4 and extra curricular activities and volunteering. what do you think my shot at getting in would be?

@russie77 Try to improve your GPA. For theater the audition is about 50% of the factor but gpa can get you rejected even with a great audition. For theater major do not worry about your math SAT score if you get 600 reading & 700 verbal.

Good then. Your audition will be most important for you then. Try to look for the right monologue for you, the one that highlights your stregnths.

At least when my D auditioned last year it was 2 contrasting with time restrictions. This is all carefully explained at the link where you will make your audition appointment.

Emerson doesn’t care about math.
I got a 60 on a math regents (state test for new york) and I got in early for WLP.
You’ll be fine, I think. Relax.
What do you want to major in?

I’m going for a performing arts major with a minor in advertising. I’m also gonna need some financial aid if I want a shot at staying there for more than a year-- my sister is at Chapman and my dad lost his job in September, so we’re having some cash-flow issues right about now.

Cumulative weighted GPA (I’m in the middle of my junior year, so there are two more semesters to be considered): 3.66

Mock ACT Combined: 30 (just took the real one this past Saturday. Can’t wait until the score comes in…)

Mock SAT Combined: 1930
That’s a 570 math, 720 reading, and 640 critical writing.
And yes, I know mock scores mean squat, but I suppose that’s at least a decent indicator of my academic ability.

I’ve also got a fairly weighty acting resum

@StrangeBro - If you want to Minor you can only do BA so make sure. BFA’s not allowed to minor at Emerson. I know that when my D applied for Fin. Aid you can explain any special circumstances and I’m sure that since your father lost his job they will try to help. I believe your #'s are right on if you can do the SAT #'s, but do not be too over confident on your audition. There is a set of instructions where you set the date for the audition (you have to submit your application 1st) make sure you follow those. Good luck!

@newsdrms Great, thanks for the tip! Wouldn’t have known that about BFAs being unable to minor. I’ve already given the audition forms a cursory glance and there doesn’t seem to be anything too out of the ordinary in there. And I’m glad that the financial aid may be accommodating, as I’ve heard Emerson is a little more tight-fisted than most.

Like I said, not worried about audition or standardized testing, as I’m used to performing at a high level under pressure, but I’ll be sure to keep my wits about me and work hard. Thanks very much!

Hi - I will be a transfer student (I am a Freshman now at another school). I have a 3.9 GPA, however, my ACT score was not good (low 20’s). I am terrible at standardized exams :=(. I am applying as a Theatre major. I have been active in all sorts of theater activities. I think I kicked butt at my audition. What are my chances?
