Hey, I'm a black male, senior in HS and I will be applying to George Mason Univ, James Madison Univ, and Virginia tech. All will be regular action. I'm really worried if I will get in any of them. My top choice is GMU since its close to my house. I'm worried because of my gpa and SAT. My gpa is 3.56 and I took all regular classes except for AP Psych. Surprisingly the AP class helped me junior year to get above 3.8 which I got an academic letter for. My SAT is pretty bad: 490 CR. 620 Math, 490 W. 1600 on the 2400 scale and 1110 on the 1600 scale. I visited GMU this morning for the open house and I like it.
I also don't have a lot of extracurriculars, I'm in:
French Honor Society (2 years)
French Club (2 years)
Chess Club (2 years)
Winter Track (1 year)
I know that Vtech is a high reach but my 2 brothers go there so I'm just applying even though I will probably not get accepted. So do I have a chance in getting into either JMU or GMU? I heard being black and a minority helps, is that true? Thanks!

Bump please ill chance back

GMU: Match
JMU: High match
VA Tech: Reach

Thanks Catria :)

I agree with catria in regards to chances. If i were in your shoes, i would try the act. I did significantly better on the act than i did on the sat. Even if you improved your score just a bit, it might give you a much better shot at getting into JMU.

Thanks dbomz72! So do you think I have a good chance getting into GMU? It’s my number 1 right now. Also should I take the TOEFL to cover up my CR score since I’m not a native speaker? Thanks again :)

I think your above average math score puts you in pretty good standing for gmu since they only look at math+cr. But then again nothing is a sure thing. Just to be safe though i would also apply to a few more schools. In regard to the toefl, i dont know anything about it or the implications it has in college admission. So unfortunatly, i cant really help you with that one
