What are my chances for MIT?

I'm a freshman in highschool and I want to know what my chances are of getting into MIT. So far on progress reports i have all As and one B. Im currently the only freshman taking trig. at my school (calc 2 senior year) and I'm taking oceanography (passed out of freshman earth science). I'm in computer tech club, science olympiad, band, and social studies club I'm planning on trying out for crew(rowing). I'm learning java, c++ and assembly computer languages on my own. What are my chances at MIT and what can i do to improve them?

see you in at least three years, we’ll let you know then. until then, don’t let your grades slip, and freshy year could be just about everywhere.

While it looks like you’re on the right track, it’s impossible to tell until the time comes for you to actually start applying to schools, I.E. your senior year. A lot can happen between now and then; you don’t even have a full semester of high school done. Just keep challenging yourself with your coursework and extracurriculars until the time comes to start applying, and start looking at other schools for whatever you eventually want to major in; MIT is notoriously difficult to get into for anyone.

^ Agreed, as a general rule, don’t ask for “chances” until you are at least a junior w/ SAT scores, because people just won’t have enough information to help you.

In terms of suggestions for rounding out your application though, I would say since you are learning Java, a good idea would be to take AP Comp Sci to solidify your foundation with a expert’s advice. In my experience, there are always some tips that you miss out on when you self-teach a programming language. Also, if there is a FIRST robotics team in your area, it might be something you are interested in. For me, it was a great way to learn C++ and start applying it with help from a dedicated mentor. Lastly, if you are going to go for the CS/programming platform for your applications, try to write something that you publish or that is used by someone other than you, whether a mobile phone app, something for FIRST, some random software, I don’t know, it’s up to you, but be creative and entrepreneurial. Saying you learned all these languages and then applied this knowledge to write a cool program or start a software company is much more impressive than just saying you know them.

you’re a freshman in high school. Be active in your school and continue to pursue what you love and what you want, but dont forget - YOU’RE A FRESHMAN!! Enjoy it while you can kid!!
