What are my chances for NYU CAS??

I am currently a junior in a high school in NY and looking to apply early decision to NYU for premed.

Ethnicity: a male asian indian

GPA: will be a 92 weighted by the end of this year. My school doesn't do unweighted and this has been on an upwards scale.

SAT: didnt take yet but looking to get a 2000+

I visited NYU once

ECs: Interact Club, Equality Club, Cross country freshman and sophomore year. 200 hours interning at a physical therapy clinic, currently shadowing a doctor for about 6 hours a week, tutor middle schoolers about 4-5 hours a week, i work at my dad's kitchen store many hours of the week, and I have also had around 60 hours volunteering at a religion camp. i also go to the gym many times of the week; i dont know if the gym would count as an extra curricular activity.

Course Rigor: I was in all honors in 9th and 10th grade. This year i am taking honors english, college pre-calc, college spanish, AP Psych, APUSH, regents physics (this is the only regents class i have ever taken and i have a 96 in it) I am going to be self studying for the Physics AP test. Next year i am taking AP calc AB, AP Bio, AP Spanish, regents English and regents social studies. The lowest grade i have ever gotten in high school was a 79 in chemistry, but to show colleges i know the material i am going to take NYU pre college during the summer for general chemistry and try to attain a good grade in it.

Awards/ Honors: going to be in the honor society next year, won a religion contest in my temple, which required us to read a textbook and take a test on it. i had received first place and won a 42 inch TV

My guidance counselors knows my drive and is going to give me an excellent recommendation letter, my physics teacher will give me an amazing one, the doctor i am currently shadowing will also write me one, and I will try to get the chemistry professor at NYU precollege to write me one.

I will also be taking the ACT and a few SAT 2 subject tests including, chemistry, bio and physics.

I am also taking college anatomy and physiology next year

and bonus question can you chance me for stony brook?

bummmmpppp

Come back once you have taken the SAT, it will probably be a low reach due to you being an ORM and the fact that your GPA is slightly low (I am assuming that your unweighted is below 90).

I agree with ArtsyGirl13.

I would like to add however, that you really lack extracurriculars that show any sort of serious motivation/drive, though the work and volunteering are very good and you should probably focus on that. If you apply ED and you get your scores in the upper ranges of the applicant pool, then it would be a low reach to mid-reach.

Chance me back? Thanks and good luck

I’m sorry but I don’t know what ORM stands for. My gpa is kind of low but I think I’m going to be in the top 20 percent in my grade so hopefully that’ll pay a factor. Do you know if doing well in precollege during the summer will help my chances at all?

Also @violinkid111 don’t the. Volunteering/interning/shadowing count as extra curriculars?

They definitely do count, and I think if you present them in the right way it could make a BIG difference, but I’m going to be candid with you: If colleges only see a sport and “Interact” and “Equality” club, they might be slightly disillusioned by that.

I think your work/internships/volunteering is a serious commitment and I think you’ll be fine if you emphasize the passion/commitment that you had for it.

Overall, it’s a reach but it’s definitely possible. Also, ORM stands for overrepresented minority.

They do count as extracurriculars, but they aren’t anything really extraordinary. I mean unless you are a leader or they have some personal impact on you, then they aren’t particularly strong or weak in my opinion. Almost every applicant has over 100 volunteering hours, and many applicants have done some field-related internship (although this is still a bonus). Your SAT score is really what may or may not get you accepted. a 2200 and you’re (likely) in. a 2000 and you’re (likely) out. This year’s grades will be quite important too - if you can increase your weighted average to say 94 or 95, your chances will increase significantly. As of now, it is very hard to gauge your chances.

I would not put ‘working out at the gym’ as an extra curricular. That just sounds desperate in my opinion.

Being an ORM (Overrepresented minority, AKA Asian) will hurt. But ED will make up for it (and more), I would expect.

How should I represent my internships and volunteering in the right way? I feel like I would get a lot more out of focusing on my internships at doctors’ offices and shadowing a real doctor than anything my school has to offer. Also my gpa this year is 96 weighted. I just messed up my freshman and sophomore year. Freshman year I had a 91 weighted and sophomore year a 89 weighted. This year I’m trying a lot and managing to pull of a 96 gpa.

Also how are my chances for stony brook pre med? My too choice is nyu but incase I don’t make it, I would like to go to SUNY stony brook

bumpmppppppp

my stats will be similar to yours assuming you got a 2000 flat on the sat. if you are able to participate in more ec, then it’s a high match. if not, low reach.
