What are my chances for Oregon State University?

Hello Everybody!

I have a pretty low gpa of 2.95 weighted and an ok SAT at 1990 (680 critical reading, 660 Math, 650 Writing). I have gotten 3s on the AP Biology, AP art history, and AP US History AP Tests and have around 150 ec hours. What are my chances of getting in to Oregon State University?

Thank you!

I would say that it’s pretty high. Your SAT score seems adequate, but your GPA would bring you down, if anything at all.

My son was just accepted yesterday. He submitted early application. He has 3.2 GPA and 1880 SAT Score. We anticipated he would be accepted. It was his first choice, so we are happy.

I’d say your chances are good. They prefer students with GPA above 3.0. but they do consider those with lower GPAs. Your SAT are very good (high enough to be considered for honor’s program at OSU). I think your APs will help too. My son did not take any yet, although he’s planning to take both AP Math and AP Computer Science. Even though OSU does not require APs, it does indicate some academic rigor. OSU admits holistically. They also weigh the relative difficulty of your coursework.

I’m not sure if you have already applied or not. If you have not, I would suggest you make sure your essays are strong. If you application is marginal, the essays might make a difference. In my son’s case, he made clear that he has an interest in Business Information Systems. His extracurricular/hobbies essay reflects an interest in computer programming, video production, etc. I think students that show an interest in a particular area of study are stronger applicants than those who go in undeclared. Demonstrating some interest in some area of specialization at OSU or expressing an interest in being there over other schools might make a difference.

Another suggested resource: search about.com + oregon state university. There’s a scatterplot diagram where you can look up your GPA and SAT score. That can give you a good sense of where you fall on the grid (either rejected deferred, wait listed, acccepted) relative to other applicants.

I also don’t know where you are from. They recruit a lot from California. They like these kids and their “out of state” tuition money. That could give you an edge also. Good luck.

Thank you @Letgoofmyego , I submitted early application and am still awaiting the decision. My gpa shows an upward incline from freshman to junior year but I understand my low gpa in freshman/sophmore year hurts my avg. tremendously. Im hoping my SAT score and essays help in my favor. Thank you for your advice!

Hey @rbstudent did you get in?!

I’m asking as my son is in a similar situation (2.8 GPA/ACT of 35). He actually applied early decision but his school transcript was a few days too late so he was put in the regular decision pool. So no word yet and of course that’s the only school he wants to attend!

@oregonfour I’m actually in the same situation so I was also put in the regular decision pool and I haven’t heard back yet. I think your son has an excellent chance with a 35 ACT. Ill be sure to let you know once I hear back from them!
