I've been reading this board for a while and thought I'd give it a shot to see if you think I have a chance to get into the Cockrell School of Engineering.
I'll be a senior at a competitive TX high school. I'm ranked about 11.5% in my class w/a 4.8 gpa. 660 on math SAT; 540 on CR SAT.

Over 300 hrs of volunteer work; 2 yrs on golf team; 4 yrs of Key Club including officer; NHS.

UT doesn't even look at your GPA and for the applicants for Fall '09 and on, they will now look at your writing SAT.
Considering you're not in the Top 10% as of now, your chances are very slim, but if you do manage to work your way up the ranks during your first semester, then maybe.

Just get your SAT score up to 1350(M/CR)/2100 and you'll have a decent shot.

What? What is the difference between a GPA and a rank?...none
I would say no as of right now, simply because your SAT score is very very low. Unless your a minority probably not.

Well, GPA can be any range of things from "4.0" to "95" to "7.395," it varies from place to place. It can also be weighted or unweighted, only include certain classes, etc. And you can't compare a kid from one system to another, because in some schools a 4.0 is the very best while in others it isn't even in the top ten percent.

A rank tells you exactly where the kid stands among his classmates. True, kids from weaker schools thus look even better, but you will see that the majority of kids admitted outside the top ten percent are coming from the same suburban and private schools that have reputations as "good schools."
