What are my chances for UC schools?

I'm a senior in high school applying to UCs at Berkeley, Davis, LA, Santa Cruz, and San Diego. I'll probably apply undecided and choose my major later.

-GPA: 4.18 UC, 3.83 unweighted, improvement every semester (from a 3.1 first semester of freshman year to a 4.29 second semester of junior year)
-SAT: 2180 (M 740, CR 720, W 720)
-APs: English Language=5, Calculus AB=5
-Currently enrolled: AP Chemistry, AP Statistics, AP Government, AP Literature... as well as Drawing&Painting and college prep Econ

ECs:
-Mock Trial, 11-12, 11: witness, 12: lawyer/team captain
-Secular Student Club, 11-12, 11: treasurer, 12: president
-JSA, 11-12, 11: attended Fall/Spring State, 12: secretary
-French Club, 10-12, 12: secretary
-Creative Impulse, 9-12, 12: publicity chair
-Tolerance/Human Rights Club/GSA: 9-12
-NHS, 12
-Art Club, 12
-Guitar (outside school), 9-12; I've also taught myself four instruments (ukulele, cello, bass guitar, and piano) if that counts for anything

Awards:
-National Merit Commended Scholar
-Principal's Honor Roll, 9-12
-Distinguished Scholar, 10-probably 12
-Golden State Merit Seal, 9-12 (for standardized test scores)

Volunteer/Community Service:
-Coaching girls' soccer (U10 fall/spring, U11 fall), ~70 hours (will be higher when I apply)
-Working on a school play, 10 hours
-Volunteering annually at an elementary school fundraiser, 4 hours/year
-I'm going to do a couple more things for community service by the time applications are due, just to help my chances (hopefully!)

Berk - High Match
LA - Match
SD - In
Davis - Safety

Thank you! That’s reassuring.
Anyone else…?

as an undecided you have a very good chance at all schools.

Disagree with hjt123. UCB, UCLA, and UCSD are high matches now. Last year numerous friends of D were turned down with >4.0 and similar SAT’s. Check UCSD forums from last year and you will see the disappointment many experienced.

Keep working hard and apply broadly. UCD should be a match for you (I wouldn’t even call this a safety) unless you are ELC. If you are ELC, you have more safeties (last year UCD, UCSB, UCM, UCR, UCI guaranteed admit for ELC).

^ agree with camomof3, admissions became brutal across the all the UC’s for Fall 2011 admission.
I’d say:
Berk and LA: Reach
SD: Low Reach
Davis: Match
Expand your list of colleges more.

Does being undecided affect my chances at all? I am ELC and I’m hoping that will help me out a little.

Davis is actually one of my top choices, so it’s nice to know I have a good chance. I’m definitely still looking for colleges but I need to find a scholarship or I can’t afford any private or out-of-state schools.

Since you are going in “undeclared”, I will personally be mildly surprised if you are NOT accepted to all the UCs that you are applying to. Granted, you are certainly not a shoo-in for the top-tier UCs, but I am betting that you get into all. To me, your EC’s are a little thin with regard to the time you are probably spending on all of them but you are a competitive candidate overall. Click “Custom Tables” on the link below, answer a bunch of questions, and enter up to 3 “mean characteristics” at a time, to see what “your” admit rate is at all the UCs:

Good luck!

Thank you! That stat finder program was really helpful.
What would you say qualifies as a “strong” EC? I’d say Mock Trial is my strongest- we have practices several hours a day, four days a week, and I’m one of the highest ranking members of the team, as a lawyer and team captain. I thought that (along with officer positions in a few other major clubs in my school) would be enough…

Bump, since everyone here seems to have a different opinion and I’d like to know more. Ha.

Just wondering… is my EC load really considered weak for the schools I listed? Mock Trial really does take up a ridiculous amount of time and I don’t have time to do other stuff between that and homework for the first semester…

I’m just going to bump this one more time and if nobody else has any input I’ll leave it alone.

To add my two cents, I believe essentially everything hjt said was accurate. If you could add a few more points here and there in your SAT you’d be pretty much secured, but not to worry about that, you still have a great shot at making it. Good luck!

I think you have as good a chance as anyone at UC’s ( but even kids like you have less than 100 percent admit rates), but be sure to apply to privates too. You might make out just as well, both with regard to your experience and with regard to cost. If you want to stay in California, try Santa Clara for a University, and Occidental for an LAC. Or the Claremonts.

Also, do you have to choose a school when you apply undecided?
Would that be Arts and Sciences? I thought everyone was essentially undecided within Arts and Sciences.

Selection
UCLA is among the most selective universities in the country and is becoming more competitive for freshman applicants each year. This past year UCLA received more than 57,000 applications, with more than 90% coming from UC-eligible students. Generally the campus is able to admit about one in four freshman applicants for the fall term.

“For the College of Letters and Science, the applicant’s major is not considered during the review process. The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science admits students by declared major, with more emphasis on science and math programs. The School of Nursing also places more emphasis on science and math programs and requires the submission of an additional supplemental application. The School of the Arts and Architecture and the School of Theater, Film, and Television admit students by declared major (within the school), and put more emphasis on special talents through a review of portfolios and/or auditions, which are the most significant admission factors for these schools.”
