Personal profile: In the summer of year nine, I began working for my father’s company, Watershed Partners, which provides consulting services to business start-ups on development strategy and project management. While serving as an executive assistant, my duties, which included directing client communications and scheduling the leadership’s itinerary, began to focus my attention on the complex processes involved in crafting the public perception of a fledgling company’s corporate image. My introduction into the world of commerce demonstrated how much the initial stages of business growth depend on the close analytical attention and strategic support of well-connected mentors. Already possessed of a passion for social justice, I now realized that my future career would involve empowering others in a particular setting: enabling otherwise disadvantaged entrepreneurs to crystalize their commercial concepts into individualized brand identities.
My scholastic experiences have provided me with relevant intellectual skills in the fields of both business development and the role that corporations play in improving our world. Two years of coursework in Marketing have honed my strategic creativity, illustrating how one can adopt a seminal idea and transform it into a compelling product through the use of language. Pre-Calculus has allowed me to learn the subtleties of complex data aggregation, as well as the solutions to problems offered by analysis of numerical differences. My studies in Social Justice have focused on the social responsibilities of business, and specifically the ways in which improving our understanding of corporate citizenship requires treating corporate brands as more than superficial appearances; they are the public face of businesses, anchoring commercial actors as progressive members of their given communities. Law has enhanced my understanding of overlapping fields, including the common law legal regime and the role it plays in governing the otherwise-autonomous actors who constitute our commercial world. Social Studies has provided further foundational skills in the interpretation of demographic trends, population change, and the significance of human mobility for economic development.
A diverse array of extracurricular commitments has furthered my understanding of the social and managerial responsibilities that business development entails. As a member of my Graduation Committee, I share oversight of fundraising outreach efforts, spearheading the planning of particular projects. As secretary at my school’s Administrative Office, I have developed strong client-management skills by communicating policies to parents and students during crisis situations. The Helping Hand Club has allowed me to implement my social passion in an applied environment, by planning approaches to charity engagement with the homeless, and individuals in social housing, in Vancouver’s under-privileged communities. Furthermore, as a volunteer at Union Gospel Mission, I engage directly with these demographics, burnishing my understanding of how grassroots organizations develop their institutional capacity. As Captain of the tennis team, I have learned how to effectively implement executive decisions in fast-paced environments, soliciting feedback from team members in order to foster focus on collective goals.
Attending business school in the United Kingdom is my academic priority, given the expedited access it will grant me to cooperative work opportunities and internships in the field of business entrepreneurship and start-up consulting. The UK’s business management programs also offer access to unparalleled resources for international students, including a socially diverse student body, an education focused on producing practical results, and the international networking connections enabled by studying in Europe. I hope to combine my commitment to small business development with continued academic focus within one of its programs.
