What are my chances of being accepted into UCSD or UC Davis (for Economics)?

My UC GPA will be 3.87. I did poorly in tenth grade (about 3.25 average) due to some issues I was facing. However, I lifted that up in 11th grade (currently) by getting around 4.6 for the year.

My SAT score is 2110. (Math: 560, Writing: 790, Critical Reading: 760)

I received a 4 on AP World test. I will soon be taking AP tests for AP Art History, AP Environmental Science, AP Psych, AP US History, and AP Lang this spring. (I might skip one though) I expect to do well on these tests. (4-5)

I am the president of two clubs and do music (violin) after school conservatory and am the first chair violinist in the school orchestra. I go to one of the best public high schools in California. (I'm not sure if that helps or hurts)

What are my chances for UCSD and UCD (and maybe other higher level UC's)? What other things beyond grades can I do to improve my standing? Thanks.

UC GPA: Low SAT: OK but Math very low for Econ major.
UCD: Low Reach
UCSD: Reach
I would retake the SAT to make up for the low GPA. Aim for a 2200+ and raise the Math Score.

UCLA/UCB: Reach

Good Luck

UCSD: Low Reach
UCD: Match
UCLA/UCB: Reach

Your stats are decent and I’m pretty sure you’ll get into Davis, but for the higher UC’s you don’t have the EC’s that distinguish you from other applicants of your caliber. I recall from somewhere UC’s don’t look at individual sections of the SAT unless you’re applying for something like engineering, it depends from school to school. Good luck!

Hi @johndoejanedoe

Have you heard of parchment.com? You can type in your grades, SAT scores, etc . . and then you can look at your stats vs. other students who were accepted . . for pretty much any college! Last year my son used it to help guide where he should apply . . and they were pretty correct in their stats!

Best wishes!

@johndoejanedoe With a UCGPA below 3.9, you will be rejected by most UCs.
UCB, UCLA: high reach
UCSD: reach
UCD, UCI, UCSB: low reach or high match
UCSC, UCR: match

@Cris1234 Parchment is useless for UC predictions. Only its scatterplots are useful. Parchment factors SAT scores into its predictions. However, scatterplots (including the ones on Parchment) suggest that the UCs completely disregard SAT scores.

@Mangiafuoco Hmm, interesting. I need to check the data out closer, per your suggestion. I wouldn’t say parchment.com is entirely useless though. I don’t think anyone or anything can super-accurately predict who can get in to where, so no - I’m not suggesting it will be 100% accurate for that. Yet, the scatter charts on parchment are helpful to see where a student stands compared to those that got in, those that didn’t get in, and those that are attending. I believe it is an interesting perspective to see and understand. It’s free and adds to the information a student can use in their many decisions at this important time.

Google the common data sets for each UC campus (For in-coming Freshman 2014) it maybe a few more months till they are posted. It breaks down the % students accepted for each GPA range, SAT/ACT and what they consider on the applications. This is a better indicator of your chances than Parchment or anyone posting on CC.
@Mangiafuoco is right about GPA, 4.0+ (UC Weighted) is pretty much needed for most of the UC’s. From personal experience with both sons, 1st son UC GPA 4.2 ACT 25, accepted UCM,UCR,UCSC,UCI,UCD. 2nd son UC GPA 3.73 ACT 31, accepted only at UCR. Also major will play an important factor and your essays.
