My gpa and rank is from the end of 11 grade. I did not do so well 2nd semester.
GPA: 3.389 weighted, 3.103 unweighted
GPA: 88.556
Class Rank: 75 out of 388

I will do anything to get into UGA. I plan on getting straight As next year and becoming hopefully a state runner and rock out on the essay. Please give me advice.

How are your test scores SAT / ACT? Your GPA is going to hurt you.

Here are the stats from 2012 ( class of 2016):

Mid-50% range for GPA: 3.74-4.04 (please remember that this is not the GPA you see on your transcript, but the GPA that UGA calculates based on the core courses taken in HS, and looking at the actual grades on the transcript)
Mid-50% range for the SAT CR and M: 1190-1360
Mid-50% range for the SAT Writing: 580-690
Mid-50% range for the ACT: 27-31
Average number of AP/IB courses: Approximately 6
39% of the freshman admitted to UGA had their strongest test score from the ACT, and if their ACT was then translated to the SAT, the SAT mid-ranges increase by over 30 points for the combined CR/M.

Thanks for replying, I just took the SATs and i have not gotten my score back. Do you think if i get around a 1700 and write a nice essay i could have a good chance of getting in.

With your GPA I think you need to aim more for a high 1900-2000 something and a 30+ on the ACT.

wow nice job at cross country! I also want to go to UGA and I think I am sort of in the same boat as you except my gpa is a bit better do you think I’ll get in? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1516293-uga-my-chances-getting.html</a>
but I think if you can get a 1900 sat and get straight A’s senior year you could get in
Hope we both make it!

I thought that I read that U of Georgia recalculates the high school GPA; to only include the 5 core subjects and they also only add .5 for AP if they are below an A. If you are already at an A, that is what you get and they calculate on a 4.0 scale. If all the above is the case; how can the top end of the 50% range be a 4.04…seems based on the methodology the highest your recalculated GPA could be was a 4.0? What am I misssing?

To be honest, UGA doesnt really care too much about Honors classes. While they do looks better than on-level, the real focus is the AP’s. Your GPA is definitely too low to get into UGA alone, but that can be compensated with a high SAT/ACT. 7 AP’s will also help because it shows the reason you had a low GPA which was rigor, but remember they will receive tens of thousands of applications with the same rigor with even higher GPAs. I’ll be straight forward: to get into UGA you need atleast like a 1950-2000 or atleast a 30 on the ACT. if you focus and study you can do it. Good luck and Go Dawgs!

Thanks so much for your advice. I’m really nervous and want to get in and i am going to study really hard and get a 30 on my ACT.Also i was wondering if UGA also looks closely at the essay reponse. Thanks again You helped alot

My daughter was accepted for 2013 and here are her stats: 3.7 with 2 AP’s but 8 honors. I think with the UGA GPA recalc, she only had a 3.5. Her ACT was superscored with 28 math and 29 English.Top 100 High School in country per US News - not sure that was a factor. There are 4 essays. Google “UGA admissions blog” and the topics may already be posted. With your low GPA, my advice would be that you need to stand out on your essays. I thought she was on the bubble of being accepted so I think her essays put her over. She had unusual EC’s and incorporated them in the essays. If your not from GA, put something in the essay that shows that - - something they don’t read everyday from the typical GA student. She talked about travels to NYC and surfing in CA. Good luck!!

Not trying to defeat your hopes, but UGA’s admissions is nothing but politics. It is about who you know, and how much your parents can donate to the school! I had grown up a Georgia fan my whole life! I had my hopes set on going to UGA since I was 6! In high school, I was a varsity letterman in 3 sports, in anchor club, yearbook, NHS, and many other clubs. I had 2 or 3 jobs, and was very involved! I had a 3.7 GPA and my test scores weren’t the best, but they were good enough to get me in (they were the same as the students that got in.) I was amazed and hurt to find out I had been denied! My father even graduated from UGA and he often donated to the school! That didn’t matter because it wasn’t what the other kids parents did! Saying this, in not saying you won’t get in, but after UGA admits the people with genius scores or kids with parents who donate in the k’s, then they basically randomly choose between the others, like me, the " average." I was an average student in their eyes. Even though I was denied, I’ll be moving to Athens in a week and a half to go to gainesville state, and to later transfer into UGA because it is still my dream school, no matter how “fudged” up their admissions are! But GOOD LUCK! And if you don’t get in, and you still want to be there, then keep trying! You’ll get there like me!

^^ I’m not trying to put down UGA or anything, but UGA is nowhere near difficult enough to get into for ‘politics’ to matter. Your GPA was unspectacular to say the least (it’s also noticeable that you didn’t mention how many AP’s you took) and you used a euphemism to describe your SAT scores…it sounds like you just were at the lower end of the applicant pool and didn’t make the cut.
