ok so I am a Junior I have been struggling in school and my only hope for life is if I get into UGA. Just based off of my scores and EC’s, what do you think are my chances?
GPA UW: 3.5/4
GPA W: 3.8/4 (My School adds 7 points of AP’s and honors)
SAT score: 1310 (This was my first time taking it…my goal is like 1450+)
Classes: 5 AP’s so far… I’ll be taking like 5 more senior year
All my other classes were honors.
EC’s: Well…not a lot. I’m in HOSA, volunteer at a hospital, dancer, in the orchestra, and I am trying to get my pilot’s license
So based on all that, what do you think my chances are at UGA?
You have a good chance, acing your math/science (core classes) this year will boost chances though. Try taking the ACT I saw somewhere a 34+ guarantees acceptance into honor program, don’t take my word for it though:)
Chance me please?
Here’s what I would recommend: Study for the SAT on weekends and in your free time for the next couple of months. When school lets out for summer, study for the SAT like it’s your job for the first week of summer. Then take the June SAT and hopefully you will bump your score up. If it doesn’t move as much as you want it to, keep studying weekly and taking practice tests every few weeks throughout the summer, and retake the SAT in Sept. I feel like with a 1450 you will be in good shape to overcome the UW GPA.
What do you anticipate your GPA will be at the end of junior year? How well you do on the AP tests could also make a difference. Try to score 4’s and 5’s.
Good luck!
It sounds like you have a good chance, your test scores and grades are good and so is rigor! Do you know what your UGA GPA is?
yeah, apparently UGA does not add extra weight to your transcript, since my high school already adds weight (7 points). So, with the weight, it is a 3.8. By the time I am a senior the highest I will get is a 3.86
I don’t think you’re doing as badly as you do. I’d suggest that you focus on your grades first, because that’s what UGA will do. Even if you can’t bring up your GPA a whole lot, who can make sure you’re showing an upward trend. Next, take the SAT again. See if you can’t boost it by at least 50 points. Use your results from the last test to focus on your weaknesses. A higher SAT score may compensate a little for a lower GPA. If you can take a good prep course, do it. If not, take lots of practice tests on your own and take full advantage of Kahn Academy’s resources. Finally, put a lot of effort into your essays and getting the best recommendation you can for your application. If you don’t already have one, try to find a teacher you connect with and spend a little time developing that relationship so when you ask for a letter of recommendation, it is one that really tells UGA about you and isn’t just a plain vanilla recommendation. Keep your eye on UGA’s admission blog and when they release the essay questions for next year’s application, get started writing them. Show them to a few people you trust – a good English teacher, a friend who loves to write, etc., and get their feedback. Most of all, make sure who you are as a person comes through in your essays. Don’t be afraid to be original and speak in your own voice.
You’ve got a good chance and plenty of time to make it a better chance. Don’t get discouraged.
Also, getting into UGA is NOT your only hope in life! If UGA is not in your cards, there will be other places you can go and get a good education. In fact, there may be other schools that would be so happy to have you they will roll out the red carpet for you! Don’t pin all your hopes on UGA.
