What are my chances for UNC?

Hello. If you don't mind, please rate my chances! I don't know how likely it is to get into UNC with poor SAT scores, but go ahead and chance me.

Background: White male from small public school in North Carolina
Planned Major: Pre-Pharm or Pre-Med
GPA: 3.840 Unweighted; 4.339 Weighted
Class Rank: 6/142ish (as of end of 1st semester when GPA was 4.192)
SAT Scores (extremely bad): 1730 - 520 CR, 550 M, 660 W (11 Essay); I am taking an SAT Prep course this summer and hope to improve CR to a 650, Math to a 650, and Writing to a 700. On the PSAT, I got a 630 on Math, so I think a 650 is doable. Critical Reading, on the other hand, I don't know.

Community Service in Addition to Involvement w/ Key Club & Interact:
-Made several blankets for a psychiatric hospital a close family member was actually admitted to a while back. This is extremely personal; the individual still has nightmares and flashbacks of how horrible of an experience it was. She had no blanket, and other various necessities. So, along with the assistance of my mom, I make blankets for the hospital. We made a few quilts, but most were fleece blankets. I would say I spent around 250 hours on this project; I plan on making more this summer and sending them out this fall or winter.
-I was recently accepted as a Junior Volunteer at the local hospital. Yesterday was my first day and it was so much fun. I mainly just transported patients, delivered mail, and did other things as requested by various nursing stations. Right now I am scheduled to work around 50 hours this summer, but I hope I can talk her into letting me work more.

Considering my current SAT scores, do I have a chance at UNC?

At one point I was only considering schools with a Pharmacy school, as I was only interested in Pharmacy, but now I think I may be interested in Pre-Med as well. So, can anyone recommend any other schools that I have a chance at with my current and/or goal SAT scores.

anyone???? bump...

I'm from North Carolina too, and I know as well as you that Chapel Hill is very competetive. Being a guy will help you as well. Your grades are more than good enough to get you in, but the SATs are very low right now. Seeing that your grades are so high, your SAT can probably be a little lower than the average (about 1290). I would say that your chances become very good as soon as you get your SATs above 1200. If you can't reach 1200, still apply, but don't get your hopes up. If you get between 1250-1300, you will be very qualified.

Okay. I am shooting for a 1300/2000, but I don't know how likely that is. My SAT Prep class looks to be pretty intense, so I should improve a lot. At least, I hope. thanks for the info!

Does anyone else have any thoughts; any suggestions for other schools?

in-state helps you a lot..

True, but probably not enough with my poor SAT scores.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other schools that look like possible fits?

UNC is ignoring the writing section right now. I think the admissions officer I spoke to while I was there said that they were ignoring it at least through the fall 2008 applicants.

Take the SAT again, and take a prep course for the SAT, and you should be fine. Your grades and ecs are fine, and like me, you're instate, so that helps a lot.

Since you're in-state, you probably have a good shot as long as you get your SAT scores up like you're aiming to do. Good luck!

Wow, that sucks for me (ignoring the writing section). Oh well... hopefully my SAT Prep course will help.
