It does matter whether the app is successful or not: it shows that you are dedicated and you have skills.
From my experience, making an app and putting it on the app store takes a lot of time. Learning how to code the platform, coming up with an idea, designing the app, implementing, and (especially) dealing with bugs takes a LOT of time. But if you have the patience and the drive, go for it.
If you are willing to do some graphic design, then try making a computer game in either Gamemaker (for 2D games) or Unity (for 3D games). From my experience, they are a lot easier to get started.
