I have a 4.2 weighted GPA with a 31 composite ACT score (34 English, 30 Math, 31 Reading, 29 Science). I’ve been captain of the varsity golf team for two years, and have also done indoor track and soccer. I am in science honor society and national honor society. I have done a ton of service through key club and other clubs. I am physically fit and can definitely do well on the fitness test. I have a presidential nomination as well. Do I stand a good chance for appointment?

No one can give you a definite answer on this, but I would say you definitely have a pretty good chance. I don’t know what you are really looking for from this site. Apply and find out!

Well I’ve almost finished my application and I just really want to get it so I’m anxious to see where I stand. I’ve done my interview and he said he will definitely right me a positive report. So hopefully I’ll get the good news!

You didn’t really mention any leadership skills you might have Sean. Do you have a job? Are you a senior?

I see, like fencersmother said, having leadership is a key part, so have you have any leadership roles within the service projects you have done or anything like that? Captain of the golf team is a good bullet for this area (just noticed that) Otherwise, if it helps you get an idea, you have about the same amount of activities as me, maybe a little more because I focused on tennis more. I had a slightly higher GPA (adjusted by the academy from 4.0 to 4.34) and slightly higher test scores (I took the SAT and got the equivalent of a 34 on the ACT) however, I received an LOA in early October (now that I think about it, I got my LOA exactly 3 years ago yesterday), before I had even started asking for a nomination. I know many people with similar stats or even much lower stats than yours that got in. I also know of some that looked good on paper but for some reason did not get in. It is really hard to tell, but I hope that gives you some idea.

I’m a senior and I’m running for VP of NHS, and I could win who knows. I’ve been captain of the golf team for two years and we have won the district championship both years. I am a lifeguard and have been in charge several times at a local pool with over 500 patrons daily on weekends (I talked about it at my interview). I’m also in my schools Math, Engineering and Science academy and in the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars Program so I actually have a lot of entry-level engineering college credit. I also attended a 1 week academy at NASA’s Langley Research Center after being successful in the VASTS program that I mentioned above. But yeah I could probably use more leadership.

Yeah thanks for your help!

The one thing to understand is that NoVA is very competitive when it comes to noms. This occurs not only due to the fact that many children are military children, but Fairfax and PW county schools are very strong schools, especially Fairfax.

That being stated because they are so competitive many are picked up from the NWL.

Your PAR is 60%, and the rigor of your curriculum, plus the rigor of the school will be placed into that equation. How many AP/IBs did you take? How many were offered? Did you take the most rigorous course load offered?

You still have time to re-take the ACT, the AFA does superscore and I would suggest you re-take it, because the higher you get on it, the more it helps you to win that appointment from the nom or Presidential.

Also, it appears you have yet to do the CFA. The CFA is one area where you do have control over. Try to max everything.

The CFA might account for a small % regarding the WCS, but every point matters. You don’t want to look back and say IF I did one more pull up, or 1 more sit-up I could be at the AFA right now.

Good luck.

Well I am in southern VA so it should be easier. However, I am a highly competitive high school. I live in Charlottesville so naturally we have a lot of people that want to go to UVA and a lot do. We offer a lot of AP/Dual Enrollment courses and I take almost all of them (obviously I can’t take every language AP course). I am in AP BC Calc, AP Physics B, AP Government, I am taking dual enrollment engineering courses, and dual enrollment english and dual enrollment astronomy. In the past I’ve take AP World, AP American, AP Composition, and AP Calc AB. I’ve pretty much taken the most advanced course load possible at my school. I have taken the hardest class available when possible. I’ve been training for the CFA and expect to do well.

Well, you are sitting better off because you are in Charlottesville. The issue will be for the Sen’s list since they will come from the entire state and not just the Congressional district.

If I recall correctly from other posters, VA reps spread the wealth (we lived in NC for our DS in this process, but now live in NoVA). That means to you they try not to duplicate their lists/slates.

Good luck you look like a strong candidate, yet none of us sit on the board that will review your packet.

Again, I would still retake that ACT because they superscore and the avg ACT for incoming classes are 31 composite. It is always better to be above the avg.

From the Candidate Booklet, I found that I am above average with my ACT scores. I am on average with my math and science sub scores, but above in English and Writing
