What Are My Chances for Vanderbilt?

Hey everyone!

I’m a high school junior, with a 4.0 unweighted GPA (no weighting at my school). We don’t have class rank either. I’m wondering with the stats below, what do you guys think my chances of getting into Vanderbilt would be?

SAT Scores: 760 Critical Reading, 680 Writing, 470 Math (even with a 4.0 I suck at math on standardized tests.) These were also my first SAT scores.

Courses: All of my courses are Honors or AP, as they have been for every year of high school. My GPA has been 4.0 all years as well. This year I am taking 6 APs: Macroeconomics, English Lit and English Lang (weird way my school does it, you do one first semester and the other second semester and take both tests at the end of the year), World History, Human Geography, and Music Theory. Last year I took AP Bio and Evironmental Science.

AP Scores: 4 on Environmental Science last year. Only test I’ve taken so far.

Work Experience: I’ve held 5 internships so far this year, including with Her Campus. I also play music at a Jewish Center at Dickinson College.

Volunteer: I have some hours dancing for nursing home residents, making Valentines Cards for elderly, and helping the elderly use iPads. Also collecting clothes and food for the homeless.

Extracurriculars: I dance (since age 4) several different styles. I also play 9 instruments. I take piano lessons at Dickinson College from the chair of the music department, as well as participating in music classes there.

Languages: I took french for two years, and will have been doing Irish Gaelic for four by the time I graduate.

Background: Cherokee

Major: I would be applying (and auditioning) to be a music major. Piano performance to be specific.

What state? And you will need a much higher SAT score. Vandy loves stats.

Pennsylvania.

Being a URM is definitely a plus, but that is severely offset by your SAT score. With that exceptionally low math score, Vanderbilt (and most other schools you’ll apply to) might think your school inflates grades.

Vanderbilt is one of the only schools I’m applying to that requires SAT scores, so I’m not worried about other schools honestly. If I retake I expect about a 650 which should help somewhat.

Yeah, I was asking because Vandy HATES (not really, but definitely dislikes) in-state applicants, because they get so many.

One thing in my favor then!

Yeah! Get the SAT to about a 2200 and write some baller essays and you should have a pretty good shot.

you play 9 instruments… but how well… you don’t want to be a jack of all trades and be a master of none… do you have anything to prove that you are good then

I play three at a highly advanced level, the rest at an intermediate level. Piano would be the one I would study, and of course I have something to prove I’m good, the audition I would do to get into the music program and of course audition tapes.
