What are my chances getting into UT or Texas A&M?

I have been worrying a lot lately about my chances of getting in to a good school. I slacked off my freshman and sophomore years which has drastically affected my rank and GPA.

3.4 GPA ( out of 4.0 )

rank : 214/494 (probably the killer here)
SAT : I haven’t taken it but my goal is a 1400
ECs :
Volunteering at SPCA
HOSA
Key Club
NHS
and UNICEF Club

-thanks!

It’s quite hard to say without your SAT score…honestly, your GPA and rank still might sink you at UT even with a good SAT score. You should have a slightly better chance at Texas A&M

I’m currently starting my second semester of my junior yr, do you have any suggestions on what I can do to improve my chances besides my SAT?

UT actually doesn’t even look at your GPA. You are the 43 percentile to them. Even with an amazing SAT score, your chances are slim.

You can look up the common data set and see their class makeup depending on class rank. 91% of UT’s class is made up of the top 25% of their class. That is not good odds for you.

A&M is 90.79 made up of the top 25%.

Don’t let the “high” acceptance rates of these schools fool you. The acceptance rates are inflated because so many applicants are in the top 7% or top 10%. A&M auto accepts if you have a 31 ACT and are in the top 25% as well.

Your major is also a huge part of your application because they admit by school/major. Generally, business and engineering (including computer science) are the hardest majors to be accepted to at both schools.

Best of luck.

EDIT FOR ADVICE:

Study for the SAT and find other schools you’d like to attend in the case you aren’t accepted to UT or A&M. Both schools do not consider your Senior grades, so you have one more semester to climb the ranking. You may be offered feeder programs that are offered for students not competitive enough for admission. They are known as CAP and Blinn Team.

Thank you I will definitely look into the CAP program. thanks!

Should be considered reach for those not qualifying for automatic admission.
