What are my chances? Good CR and Writing Score mediocre Math Score

My combined SAT score is 2050. I got 750 in CR, 610 M, and 690 in W. I got a 9 on my essay. I currently have a 3.8 unweighted GPA and a 4.5 weighted GPA. I am currently taking AP Euro and AP English Lit. and I plan to take AP Chem and AP Spanish Lang. next year (I am currently a junior).

I am an officer for several clubs in school and participate in some extracurricular activities. I am Vice President of my school's chess club/team and I am secretary for a club called SAVE, which raises money for a school for girls in Tanzania. Also, I am an event organizer for Agape, which is a Christian club at my school. I am one of 40 or so students who have been chosen to be an orientation leader for incoming ninth graders (I have done this since 10th grade and plan on doing it until I graduate). I'm in my school's chapter of National Honor Society.

Outside of school, I give guitar lessons and participate in a community band playing bass and guitar. I have also been playing gigs with my dad since I was 9 (I am 17 now). I have played for the Tuskegee airmen and I am going to playing at a Christmas event that will be attended by Pennsylvania Superior Court judges. When I was in 5th grade, I played with my school district's high school alumni band. I also participate in the Youth Advisory Board at my local library; this group meets to organize events to get youth interested in coming to the library. I play bass guitar at my church and I participate in my church's youth group, which meets weekly.

I was wondering what you think my chances are of getting into schools such as Lehigh University, Northeastern University, Boston University, etc. I am also interested in UPenn and Cornell, but I know I would definitely have to pull up my math score for those schools to even consider me (I should probably take the SAT again anyway). I don't know what I want to major in yet. I am African-American, but I may not provide that information to the colleges I apply to. to the colleges I apply to.

Any help would be appreciated.

Why would you not include your race? Just curious.

I’m in a somewhat similar situation as you, where my math score is low compared to my critical reading and writing. I would hope that despite math being at the 25th percentile or below the other two being at or around 75% make up for that.

I feel uncomfortable including my race because I don’t want to get into a college simply because I am underrepresented minority and have decent grades; I want to be seen as a student that holds potential. Also, I don’t feel right having an advantage just because I’m black. It isn’t really fair to others that likely have the same credentials as I do, but are not an underrepresented minority.

Thanks for your input. It would be great if my critical reading and writing score compensated for my math score, but I’m nervous that my math score may be too low. From what I’ve heard, colleges put much more emphasis on critical reading and math than they do on writing. If one’s CR or M score is low, it may really hurt one’s chances for admission. I’ll most likely take the test again and aim for 660-680 in math so that I can put my nerves at ease haha

That’s an understandable reason not to include race. Go you!

Yeah the higher math score always helps obviously haha. My situation was that I had a 770 is critical reading, a 750 in writing, and a 620 in math the first time I took the SAT. Two test dates later (and too much practicing math) I made it to a 690 (so close 5 questions argh) and writing went up too to 770. So still lopsided, but not bad at all. A math 680 would definitely help, but I would also recommend studying writing (even if it’s just the night before… like me) because it’s also easyish to raise.

Wow that’s awesome! Definitely encouraging. Thanks for the advice! I’ll be sure to practice both writing and math extensively before the next time I take the SAT.

I have to say that just based on your philosophy you deserve to be admitted to every college you apply to. Extremely unselfish, but unfortunatly I can do your chance thread now because I’m massively biased towards you! Good luck, I know it will come your way with that attitude towards life!!

" Also, I don’t feel right having an advantage just because I’m black. It isn’t really fair to others that likely have the same credentials as I do, but are not an underrepresented minority."

Man, go you, really. But if I was you I’d use everything I could if I was black. Take advantage of the flawed system lol…unfortunately colleges are businesses and want well rounded classes. Not including your race might serve to your detriment in more competitive schools (like Upenn and cornell).

That’s a choice she has to make for herself. There aren’t many exceptional people out there willing to do this, but it will count to those that matter most in her life…

Hahaha thanks everyone! 11scooter, I’m a guy haha, but thanks!

@11scooter yeah. It is extremely noble but…being noble in an ignoble process won’t help anybody (other than himself if he gets in. It’s essentially a pat on the back if he gets in because they didn’t take his race into account.)
