What are my chances? How can I improve?

Hi. :)

Yes, I know. Another one of theeese questions. But hey, help me out, because I need to chill.

I'm interested in UIC, UIUC, Pepperdine University.

I live in Chicago.

I'm in many extracurricular activities, including singing, acting, drama, student government, school newspaper. I play volleyball and basketball. I'm a great leader. :) I've written 10 novels. Published 2. Working on getting signed on with literary agent for the rest of my career. I have a blog with over 2,000 fans who love my stories! I want to go to a university to study creative writing so I could become an author. I'm interested in owning a business as well. I did not take the act, but my goal is to score above a 30. I've always had a normal gpa. A little above average, I suppose. It's a 3.2. But next quarter IT IS going to be a 3.7. :)

Freshmen and Sophomore my gpas were both 3.0s, and this is what I'm worried about.

GREAT ACT SCORE + AMAZING TEACHER RECS + OUTSTANDING ESSAY + AP CLASSES SENIOR YEAR + PUBLISHED NOVELS - LOW GPA = ???

haha okay that was cheesy. but seriously, my gpa worries me. :(

What are my chances/how am I doing/advice for 16 year old? haha.

Thanks.

Your grades are obviously the weak point. Ten novels, two published, and creating a blog with 2k+ fans, newspaper, with sports and fine arts ECs on top of that, not to mention student government? You’re looking like a great applicant.

Work on those grades, take both the ACT and SAT early. High score will help you out a ton, obviously.

My advice to you, is find different more/different colleges to apply to. Do more research! I mean, why UIC, UIUC, and Pepperdine? The thing about becoming an author is, it doesn’t require a degree. You’re an author already, in fact. Not sure what your financial situation is, but I mean, Pepperdine is pretty darn expensive. You should look for universities that are a match academically and have strong English programs. I don’t believe the schools you listed have particularly strong English programs at all, not 100% though.

Good luck, and keep up the good work!

What novels?? You look good. no pun intended.

Thanks! Yes, I’m working on a 3.7 at least. I’m taking all ap classes next year to challenge myself. I will look into more schools. I am in fact taking the act early to get it out of the way and see how I do. Kinda nervous. I don’t know if I’m taking the sat? :frowning: I live in the midwest, it’s not required.

Thanks! Just gotta work on my gpa… And I’m a YA Romance Writer. Wanna check out my blog?

The one thing about UIC/UIUC is that they do not look at letters of recommendation for regular admissions. They are literally shredded. Both of them are very grade/ACT oriented for admissions. UIC places more value on GPA/class rank and UIUC places more value on ACT/SAT scores. You have a better chance at UIC than UIUC. However, UIC is not a liberal arts school. Its emphasis is more on technical and health care areas.

… Great …

I suggested taking the SAT as well just because you might get a better score on the SAT. Colleges will accept either test, or both. Up to you though.

You may want to take a look at the University of Iowa. Its Iowa Writers’ Workshop is a very well regarded graduate program, so I would assume that their undergraduate english program would also be very good.
