what are my chances if I choose CSU?

Hi! this is the first time that I write in here.

Anyway, let me explain about my situation…I am an international student from Brazil and, unfortunately, I’ve been rejected to all the Uc’s that I’d applied (ucla, ucb, ucd, uci, ucr, ucsb, ucsd) =(…but accepted to csun and el camino college so far…and still waiting for csulb and csula responses… So I was wondering if I really want to get into a UC, preferably to ucla, where should I go? I heard that community colleges have better chances if I want to transfer afterwards but at the same time I’ve heard they’re considered “cheap schools”. The majors that I plan to study are engineering, financial business, or anything related to computer (computer science, web design, information system). Im a afraid that if I choose csulb, which is my first choice now, my chances of being accepted to a UC decreases… I would be very grateful if anybody could give me some advice!

Yes, your chances are MUCH better from a community college than from a csu. However, do ckeck that the preference for cc students at UCs applies to internationals and not just CA residents.

I second Zagat's advice. CCs have contract agreements with UCs. CSUs, do not.

but dont you think that being in a CSU they may take into consideration that it is a tougher school than CC's? for instance, if they were to decide between 2 transfer students...1 from CSU and the other from CC...and both have same qualifications to be accepted...such as grades, gpa, and all credits needed...which one would they pick?

The system is built to connect CCs to UCs. CSUs are just kinda their own separate system. What you could do though is finish our your four year degree at a CSU, then try to go to a UC for graduate school.

I think something like 95% of transfer acceptees at UCSD come from CCs. That leaves only 5% of them being from CSUs and other 4-year institutions. I don't know if I want to go to UCSD badly enough to spend 2 years at City College of SF. After all, I got into UCSB. Still, if I wanted to transfer from UCSB to UCSD later on, I'd be stuck in that 5% accepted pool of applicants. :</p>

To sum it up...

Do NOT go to a CSU. If you do, your chances at flagships Berkeley and UCLA are totally gone.

Go to a CC instead.
