I am currently a high school senior and am applying to GA Tech.
GPA: 3.85 the only one my school shows
SAT: 1450
AP COURSES: World History, Human Geography, Language, US History, Physics, Macroeconomics and Psychology.
I know my GPA isnt high and im taking Accel Calculus instead of AP. So I understand if my chances are low. Thats why my safe school is Kennesaw State. But any ideas of my chances? Would my major of industrial design increase my chances?
Hey man! When I applied last year, I was wait listed and eventually the class filled up and I wasn’t admitted. Shucks. That being said though, I had a 1320 SAT, 3 less APs than you, and was taking precal my senior year. I was still top 10% of my 600+ person class, had great extracurriculars, and a 3.96 GPA but overall I was missing the AP Calc and high SAT of your average Tech applicant. Maybe I would’ve been accepted if I got to where I could’ve taken AP Calc, but really I’ll never know.
I wouldn’t keep myself up at night about not having AP Calc. People hype it up a ton to try and scare you. The stats say 97% of admitted freshman had AP Calc or higher but obviously that’s not to say all of the AP Calc students got awesome grades in it or got credit from the exam, right? About 7,300 kids were accepted last year by the end of regular, so around 219 kids were let in without having AP Calc. It is doable. I’m sure after I respond to you someone who took/is taking AP Calc is going to come hose me for saying that, but that’s just a thought.
ABOUT KSU: Currently I’m at KSU setting myself up to transfer to GT next fall and I’m doing really well. However, I would personally say you should maybe consider another school for your backup. I’m a pretty outgoing guy and I love being around people but at KSU I find myself being alone a lot. That’s not bad, now I have a lot of time to make sure I keep my grades up, but I get lonely. There really isn’t very much to do here and most of my friends I’ve made all live at home instead of on campus so once class is over they hightail it home and I’m here. Most of my professors are cool, the campus is really new, and my classes are interesting but socially KSU isn’t what I expected. I’m not miserable but I would’ve enjoyed myself more by going to Auburn or Georgia State because they have more events and things to do.
Some food for thought! Make what you want out of not having AP Calc, try your best in Accelerated and be that 3% who gets in without it! Assuming you have good extracurriculars, essay, and recommendation, combined with your other stats I’d give you maybe a little higher than average chance.
