I’m worried I might not make due to my low standardized testing scores. I am in an instate student

The average ranges for engineering students at UT are 75% 1490 SAT (770 math), 34 ACT (35 math), 25% 1290 SAT (680 math), 30 ACT (30 math). Your SAT score is in the middle, your ACT is on the low side. The big question is what are your math scores? If you have high math scores that helps. Know that UT is a reach, so do apply to other schools.

i got a 770 as my math score and a 660 for the english on the SAT. and a 33 on the ACT math @GTAustin

Those scores really help! That being said, nothing at UT is guaranteed. Make sure you apply to other schools that you would be happy at as well.

You’re in the top 4% so you’ll get into the university as in-state under the 7% rule. Just based on what I know of our S who is a new ChemE student, you should get into the ChemE major with your stats - but it may be worth taking the ACT again to boost it up. I would certainly consider UT as a ChemE a “should get into” school for you (not a reach or a safety). The question you should be really start asking is “Is UT the right school for me”. Good luck.

My son was top 1% of a class of over 900 and had a 33 ACT. He was not admitted to ChemE. This was a couple of years ago. It is extremely hard to get in to.

You never know at UT. We had a friend who was top 1% in a class of over 600 at a competitive Texas HS that did not get accepted into ChemE last year. I don’t know his test scores but he was a National Merit Commended student, so he does well on the standardized tests. He took all the AP classes in physics and calculus. He should have gotten in but he did not. Do not consider admittance to ChemE guaranteed.

Ok thanks for the feed back, I’m going to retake my ACT and hopefully bring it up to a 33 or 34

Give it your best shot. Write a great essay but apply to some other universities that you would be happy to attend.
