What are my chances - MESSED up SAT Math

Hey all,

I'm wondering if you can look at my school list and stats and tell me if you think I'm reaching too high. I won't repost all of my data here since it's on my 'Application Tracker', but I'm specifically worried that my mid-range SAT Math score will hurt me at the top tier schools.

My stats - http://www.tumr.com/view/?id=20&app=college

Thanks!

Nash

Do any of those schools accept scores from multiple sittings? You may be able to retake?

Your GPA is really, really good, and your SAT II Math might negate your SAT I performance. Extra's are a little weak for ivies... you should probably apply to more mid-range schools, just in case.

Your combined M+V is 1400, and M+V+W is 2130. I wouldn't worry.

Retake if you really worry. I got into all UCs (including Cal and UCLA), NYU and Cornell with these stats: 640 W 680 M 740 M (for UCs) or 640 W 700 M 740 M (for privates) for Engineering.

Roy - Thank you for posting your stats for comparison.

ihateCA - Thank you for the vote of confidence.

Munro - Those are actually my best scores. I don't know why, but I just felt like the SAT math was harder than the SAT II one, which really cannot be true! I must have just stressed too hard.

With regard to my extracurrics, I totally agree that I haven't done enough. (I'm hoping they'll like the varsity athletics, though everyone has a lot of those, I'm sure.) I'm having a hard time thinking of what I can do in the summer before I apply that will really make a difference. Of course, maybe that just makes sense - they want to see long term dedication. Hmm...

No Problem. Oh and the second M is actually R for reading. Sorry for confusion.

nashtynash! i sympathize with your thoughts about the SAT math vesus the SAT II one... while i only scored 730 on the SAT math, i scored 760 on the SAT II Math 2C. Weird, huh? Anyway- i think you are a competitive applicant, but you do need to up your extracurriculars and definitely apply to a some more mid-range schools. None of those schools are a "match" for anyone, so you gotta be careful! While your current SAT score is good, you have to realize its only normal compared to the rest of the applicants to the schools you have chosen. Just a glimpse of my personal history: I scored 2280 on the SAT (800 W, 750 CR, 730 M), had 760 Math2C SATII, 730 US History SATII, some pretty good extra curriculars (class prez, internationally recognized choir, etc) as well as a rare (sometimes fatal) lung disease (random, i know... but its a "hardship"). I don't know if I would have had a better shot applying to some schools back east, but I applied to Stanford SCEA (rejected), UCLA (accepted), USC (accepted, Dean's scholar) and UCDavis (accepted, regents). Looking back, I wish I had applied to a few more reaches, just in case, but I'm fairly happy with the results of my "college search". However, as I said- you never know what can happen with the admission process. Reach high, but don't forget about your matches and safeties : ) Good luck with everything!

Thanks for the replies everyone. Sarahjhansen, thank you for sharing your story. I'll definitely be sure to point the adcoms in the direction of the extra-extra-currics that I'll do over the summer.

you should probably add some safety schools to your list

You would be lucky to get a McDonald offer before a bullet goes through your head (your own trigger).
