What are my chances? NYU, BU, UMich, etc.

Hi, I’m a prospective high school senior and was wondering what my chances are for the following schools: NYU, Boston U, UMich, Boston College, & UCLA. If you have other suggested schools that fit my profile, please let me know! I can’t really tell what my "range’ is lol. Also, if you have any general comments or advice, I would love to hear your input. Thanks

UW - 3.83

SAT I - 1450 (700 Math, 750 ERW) 18/24 Essay

  • senior year: AP Psych, AP Bio, AP Lit

Senior Year Course Load:

  • Calculus
  • AP Psychology
  • AP Biology/Lab
  • AP Literature & Composition
  • Rutgers University Dual-Enrollment Anatomy & Physiology/Lab

  • Annual Honors in 9th Grade
  • Annual Honors in 10th Grade

Essays: I haven’t started yet, however, I do plan on writing about how my older sister, who had neurological difficulties, was what sparked my interest in joining my local EMS, and eventually my interest in medicine & neuroscience. Also, one thing I want to talk about is my interest in the field of alternative medicine. I’ve always been fascinated by it, since my family practices Chinese herbal medicine and because my cousin, who passed away from cancer, was extremely dependent on alternative medicines & treatment. I wrote to President Obama, expressing my concerns with alternative treatments for cancer, and his response to me was what influenced me in wanting to do more research in college & beyond. I can’t tell how strong my essays are going to be, but I’m pretty confident in my writing and my ideas.

Teacher Recs:
honors organic chem teacher - will be good. She’s an MIT alum (doctorate) who has written a lot of rec letters. She only says yes to a few kids every year, and I think she likes me because I was struggling in her class in the beginning of the year, I was way underqualified compared to my classmates, but I eventually became one of her top students.

APUSH Teacher - will be decent/good. I wasn’t a “remarkable” student, but I had great grades, was one of the few who participated a lot, and I think that she liked me & the jokes that I would crack in class lol.

Counselor - should be good, he knows me very well.

Other:

  • State: New Jersey
  • School Type: Public, extremely competitive
  • Ethnicity: Asian
  • Income Bracket: less than $100,000
  • Legacy: just Rutgers from my mom

Hey,

I’d say that you have so-so academics with a strong GPA, but slightly lacking in the SAT department. Your ACT looks like it will probably get you through admissions however I would recommend retaking SAT if possible and shooting for at least 1500 with the schools you listed. Your EC’s show interest in your majoring field and are fairly strong in terms of leadership and authority. Your essay ideas also seem very intriguing and I’d say that those will give you a solid chance at most schools your shooting for.

Hope this helped
Chance me back if you can

BU is a match, NYU high match/low reach, and UMich/UCLA are reaches. SAT is within the range for BU, but as the poster above mentioned, try to retake.

Since you are OOS for UCLA, it’s going to be expensive (60,000 a year with little if any financial aid). You will need to calculate your UC GPA (OOS weighted GPA from grades 10-11 take into account AP/IB/DE only).

I assume Rutgers will be your safety.

UPitt has a very good program for Neuroscience + Pre-Med . Based on the info, you should be able to get a small scholarship as well . They are usually looking to attract some OOS who bring value to the student body. You could use your ACT scores while applying.

Case Western might be another school to consider as well, especially with your current ACT score. The cognitive science/neuroscience program is strong and CWRU has a top tier medical school. High match with the ACT.
