I scored a 34 on my ACT, but I have a GPA of 3.7 and a weighted GPA of 3.9. With these stats, do you think I have a chance of getting accepted into Vanderbilt? I feel confident with my ACT score but my GPA isn't as strong. Will my GPA bring me down, or can I make up for it with my test score?

The decision process is based on a lot more than your GPA and ACT. Additionally, more important than your GPA is did you take the most demanding courses offered and how does your GPA compare against the rest of your school. The schools reputation may play a roll and if your school ranks the students that will also be considered. Of high importance is your extra curricular activities and any leadership rolls you may have had. Your recommendations and essay will also be very important. The short answer is that it is highly unlikely that any one thing will get you in or keep you at. In any case that is an excellent ACT score and from your GPA I’m guessing that you are smart and well motivated. Keep an open mind about all schools as there are many great schools and I am sure at least one that you want will want you. Vanderbilt is a truly great school (IMHO) and I wish you the best of luck and try not to stress to much about the application process (having said that, do put in the effort on your application and essay).

To give you some perspective, I was admitted into the Fall 2013 term with a 3.55 UW, 4.5 W (lol), 34 ACT, 2280 SAT. However, this was off of the waitlist, and I am fairly confident that if I applied with these stats to Fall 2014, I would not get accepted. Things only seem to be getting harder unfortunately…

Also, I was rejected from all of the Ivies I applied to (if you’re interested in that sort of thing).

My stats are similar to yours but I’m going to retake the ACT again (scored 32) to increase my odds. I’m applying to Vanderbilt also (class of 2014) Hope you get in as well!!!:))

I’ve read the combined ED1, ED2, RD stats, but I’m curious to know the the 50% mean for ED1 alone. I’m applying ED this fall with GPA UW 3.8, W 4.3, ACT 32, good academic rigor, good EC’s, teacher recs, sister recent athlete, graduate of Vandy. Do I stand a good chance ED?

Tides, I am sure you have a chance for ED. However, we are talking Vandy which should be considered as difficult an admit as Duke and a couple of the Ivies. If you are serious about Vandy, get even more serious about testing. You have nothing to lose. You have time for the fall ACT sitting. You have time for a couple of SAT Subject test sittings which also require serious prep with the prep books. I hope you have strong AP scores to report. Please study the Red Book of real ACTs and see if you can’t get a couple more points if you are dead serious on going to Vandy. The ACT has aspects of Subject Tests Built In. Do not count on ED to be softer re stats and sibling legacy is always dicey and has little prediction value although it is a positive of course to be from a black and gold family.

Your numbers are in range but remember it is a holistic process at all top universities. As noted above Vandy’s test scores are now higher than Brown, UPenn, Dartmouth, Cornell, Duke and JHU. Apply ED and good luck.
