Rank: 66/549
SAT: 1240
Extracirricular: NHS (senior year), SkillsUSA (senior), FCS (doesn’t think it matters), community hours, and summer programs, and UIL (but nothing earned)
Unweighted GPA: 3.99
I am currently taking 1 AP class (Physics), and two dual credit classes, but haven’t taken test. Sadly, I took 4 regular class in school. So, I am planning on taking 3 or 4 (Calculus BC and Physics C) AP courses for my senior year to make up for them. I plan on either taking dual credit English 4 or AP English 4 as the last class.
How are my changes if I plan on applying to the colleges on an engineering degree? If I can’t get in, what colleges would you suggest?
Thanks ~ Kid in need
You shouldn’t have any problem getting into Texas A&M. The college/major is entirely up to you. The engineering school is first come first serve, so be sure to apply early.
I Second That!
I believe you can start applying in July but make sure finish by end of August. You will receive admission Poster/Letter in October or before Thanksgiving. For some Engineer majors, TAMU wants to see your 1st semester Senior grades and maybe because 4 regular classes as a Junior.
Have your ducks in a row. resume, essays(all 3), transcript, teacher’s recommendation, fafsa, etc. If you live near, road trip.
Gig 'Em and Welcome to the Aggie Family, Class of 2023.
You will struggle to be accepted as an applicant to the university (step 1) before you get to the engineering review stage. Vast majority of students are now automatic admits to the university (over 80%). The good news is that you do satisfy academic admit standards for class rank (top 25%) now you need to raise your scores (1240 does not qualify).http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshman/admitted
Sign up for additional testing, study using self study online (Khan Academy is free) or sign up for tutoring. Start studying now - you may continue to take exams even after you have applied & update your file until the deadline for documents is reached. Try both the ACT and SAT. Engineering review looks at your potential for success based on what you have previously achieved - advanced math & sciences are a good start. Anything that you can add to the resume this summer will help you. Do choose a back up plan – decide the area you would also be happy attending school & seek out the requirements for admission to that local university or college.
@coolguy40 , college of engineering is no longer first come, first served. The process is: accepted to university then engineering review then decision given: admission to Cstat COE, Galveston COE, Blinn Engineering or pick another major (they may have added McAllen campus to the list).
“All applicants who select Engineering as a first choice major, including those who qualify for automatic admission to the University via Top 10% or Academic admission, will be reviewed holistically for full admission to General Engineering and pathways that lead to an Engineering degree. Applicants will not be reviewed for second choice majors outside of Engineering. Students may choose to change their major prior to receiving a decision. To qualify for Early Action notification, your admission file must be complete by October 15.”
Obviously my opinion differs from those above. Yes, review admits still attend TAMU however, it is consistently getting more competitive every year. Very few review admits get quick answers of admission, thus it is more advantageous to up your score & qualify for an automatic status. Best of luck!
Can’t edit above ^^ yes, it does look like McAllen engineering option will continue next year. The odds for ‘acceptance’ of review candidates are posted on FAQ
As an applicant going through holistic review, what is the likelihood that I will get admitted?
Approximately 35% of review applicants typically receive some form of admission to Texas A&M. There are several different admission options including:
Full Admission to Texas A&M
Texas A&M Blinn TEAM
Engineering Academy at Blinn
Aggie Gateway to Success
Engineering at Galveston
** note those odds are for all of the above decisions not just full admission to College Station campus.
@AGmomx2, I think we are all on the same page. @Jyao123 is asking CC because he fall short as an academic admits. We all know by the book, you are correct on your opinions but not all are set in stone at TAMU.
I’m coming from being an Aggie myself, parent of 2 kids at TAMU in past 4 years and one will enter Aggieland in 2019.
@Jyoa123, I owe you lunch if I’m wrong.
*Naviance gives true induction on admission and your score were never rejected in past year (from our school, not sure about major)
*TAMU will see academic potential in every student, I see you have it.
*If you finish out strong senior year with all your STEM classes.
Also, Just as above post, There is more than one way to receive Aggie Ring.
Good Luck and Gig 'em
@jyao123 having just gone through this experience with my son this year for engineering I would say your chances of being admitted to the university are decent. My guess is that Blinn team or Gateway are the most likely outcomes with a shot at full admissions. A&M will look at the following in its admissions: class rank at the conclusion of your junior year (senior year grades, classes you take, or rank at the end of senior year don’t count as admission decisions are already rendered unless you fail a course then A&M can rescend their offer), highest test score, (essays and ECs if review admit). GPA or the competitiveness of your school are not considered. Engineering will look at the STEM classes and you math scores on SAT/ACT in their holistic review for admissions. All engineering students take the same classes with a few exceptions (chemistry or physics) depending on your desired major. All freshman are general engineering their freshman year. You don’t pick major until spring of your freshman year through the Entrance to a Major process. My son was not offered admission but was accepted to the engineering academy Blinn Brenham. He will be co-enrolled. I have write up of that in a seperate thread if interested.
As for when you will receive notice that depends on whether you are a review admit or not. If auto admit, then you will most likely receive acceptance to the university within a month and a decision on engineering acceptance could take a little additional time because of the holistic review. If you are a review candidate, be prepared to wait until January -March.
Could you send me the link as I would be interested in finding all the help that I can get.
@jyao123 use the search function or scroll down until you find engineering academy thread.
@jyao123 my son was a full admit to engineering and only took a few AP courses. Based on admissions we saw on these forums last year you will need to increase your SAT score. You may also consider taking the ACT and see how you do there. You can continue taking these tests even after you apply, we also found local tutors for these tests but ended up not needing them. Write excellent essays!! My son also wrote a letter of recommendation for a STEM teacher to sign and had one from an aggie grad he worked for over the summer. Holistic review is just that, make yourself as a person and student shine and show how you fit the Aggie core beliefs. Good luck and don’t wait until the last minute to complete your application.

There are opportunities to retake the MEP during Howdy week as well as Math 150 in summer school. I have not delved into it at length for the entire criteria as of yet.
