What are my chances of admissions with one bad grade?

hello! I am a senior at high school this year and so like any other senior this time of year i am dealing with a lot of stress. First semester is finished for us and our first semester grades will be sent to the colleges we applied for next week. I have one bad grade on my report card, a D(65), which is in calculus. the classes i took and what i got on them are: us gov(A+), art 1(A+), PE(A+), AP human geography(A), AP calculus AB(D), AP lit(A-), and physics(B+). all my grades in my other classes are good except for calculus. the colleges i applied to are uva, jmu, vtech, vcu, gmu, cnu, odu, and radford. My gpa not including this year is a 3.73 and my sat score is 1410( i know its not that high), i came here from africa when i was eight if that makes a difference. i still feel like i can get into some of those schools but im worried about vtech, uva, and jmu which are my top choices. my questions are: will that D hurt me much even though all the other grades are good? is there something i can do to let these colleges know that i am will to work harder to bring up my grade second quarter? should i accept the fact that i screwed up and that i won’t be able to get into my top choices? please help me.

Generally, a lower than usual grade won’t matter, but a D will definitely affect things. Is there a personal reason for it? If there is, you could always mention it in additional comments. Also, is that the new or old sat? If its the old one, it might be a problem. However, it looks like you are very consistent with your grades otherwise, so it could always work out. Good luck! Chance me back?

chance me back?

sauceysauce, there really wasn’t a good reason other then the fact that i slacked off. and as for the sat, that was the best score out of the two times i took it. and by the way how bad will the D affect admissions? wont they understand that it is a very challenging class?

They will understand it’s a challenging class. It’s your entire body of work they will review, not just the one score. Is the SAT score all three sections or just math and reading? If it’s all three sections then it’s low. I expect you will get a no from UVA. If applying engineering at Va Tech, then also a no. JMU, CNU low reach, GMU and VCU maybe. ODU and Radford will probably be a yes. If you are a first generation college attendee and a minority, that may help in the decision process of the mid group - GMU and VCU.

Before I applied to uva my chances were low to begin with but I thought I would try anyway. And I applied undecided to all my colleges. So I hope I can get into vtech and Jmu

Having a D on your transcript will hurt your chances, especially since it’s a core math class. Just live with it, though; don’t try to make excuses to the AdComs.

Well, I guess I have no choice but to accept it, I screwed my self over and now I have to live with it. I geuss live and learn. Thank you all for your input.
