I am a freshman in high school halfway through my year. For a while, I have been thinking about working on an artist’s portfolio, but never took it seriously until now. I am a beginner at drawing, however, I am working every day to improve myself at it, and I am also taking classes. I hope to study in schools such as CalArts (highly unlikely), SVA, Ringling, Pratt, SCAD. I am wondering, with the time I have left to work on it, do I stand a chance at it? Is there any advice or feedback that would be helpful? Thanks!
As a freshman you have a lot of time. Most students create the majority of the art that’s in their application portfolios during their junior and beginning of senior year. But they’ve been honing their skills (like you’re doing now) for awhile.
Make sure to enroll in as many art classes you can at your high school. In most high schools, your art teachers will be a much better resource than your guidance counselors in knowing what schools to apply to, how to prep a portfolio (what pieces to include, how to photograph) and they’ll also know about National Portfolio Day Reviews (you don’t really start going to them until you’re a junior). If your family can afford it, outside and summer classes also help too.
Pssst…post over in this group and there’s a lot more discussion about art schools and portfolio prep: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/
Thanks for the advice! I did pick out a lot of different art classes my sophomore year. I am taking art classes outside of school as well, and plan to participate in more summer programs!
