If you want to be really awesome, it would be great if you could just say safe, most likely, maybe, reach, or absolutely not.
I am a high school senior who is ranked 4 out of 117 kids. My grades are all high A’s, so I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA. I have taken several AP classes and received a score of 5 on five of them and a 4 on one of them. I have outstanding extracurriculars: I volunteer A LOT, am NHS president, started my own tutoring program, started a club at my school, am part of the Spanish Honor Society, won a poetry award, am a district representative in my city’s youth council, and this summer I interned with a district judge and traveled to Japan with my school. Those are the good things. Oh, also I’m Asian.
Cons: I don’t play sports or play an instrument. My ACT score was a 31 with a 23 on the writing. My SAT was worse (1390). I’m not a National Merit Scholar.
So yep please let me know what you think my chances are!
Was your 1390 on the new or old SAT? I’m guessing new.
I’m basing this on ACT and GPA
-Davidson College – match
-Emory University – reach
-Grinnell College – match
-Lafayette College – most likely
-Reed College – reach
-Rhodes College – most likely
-Rice University – very high reach
-The University of Texas at Austin’s Plan II Program – sorry, I don’t know anything about this.
-University of Richmond – most likely
-Wesleyan University – reach
Good luck
Not sure I agree with Grinnell being a match. Not because of your stats, but because when a school has an 18% acceptance rate well, it isn’t a match for most people. A friend of my daughter’s was wait-listed with a 35 ACT, 4.0 UW, 5.0 W, lots of ECs. It happens. Having just gone through this process, I can tell you to be prepared for what feels like a seeming randomness to responses, recognizing that the decisions have less to do with your qualifications or your potential for success at the school, and more about what the makeup of their class looks like and how you fit into it. Make sure your safety and match schools are those you would be happy to attend, and you will be in great shape when you make your final decision next spring - which undoubtedly will include a number of your reaches as well!
Thank you! Yes, the SAT score was the new one. I’m going to try and sneak in another ACT before applying and hopefully raise my 31. I know it will be hit or miss, but I have automatic acceptance into UT so I’m going to risk it!
