My freshman year I sadly didn’t get top ten percent. My cumulative weighted average was a 93.92, while the minimum top ten percent average is a 97.57. I am an oncoming sophomore and I am nervous about me not being able to be in the top percentile. So, is there a chance that I could somehow climb my way back up before college admissions? I am taking all “advanced” classes possible for my upcoming grade. I also do extracurriculars.
Thanks!
Your chances of climbing into the top 10% have to do with your cumulative performance and the performance of your peers. Of course it’s mathematically possible. If you averaged between 94 to 100% , this would increase your current GPA and possibly your ranking. However, most would say not to focus on the numbers.
Do your best and engage in activities you enjoy.
It doesn’t matter if you get into your school’s top 10% as long as you are maintaining a high GPA, extracurriculars, and a steady, healthy lifestyle.
Thanks! But I attend school in Texas and in UT more than 90% of incoming freshman were admitted byautomatic admissions (getting top 10%)
Just do the math.
By my shaky arithmetic, you would need to average a GPA of 98.79 for each of your remaining 3 years to reach the top 10% threshold.
Keep in mind though that you apply to colleges before your final report card so you really have just 2 years before applying. That means you get to your threshold as soon as the end of your junior year you would need to average a GPA of 99.1 for the next two years.
That assumes constancy in the GPA of the rest of your class. There will be some natural fluctuation.
UT auto admit is actually top 7%, so it seems highly unlikely for you (mathematically). Top 10% is for A&M and UTD. Just keep doing your best. Get a great ACT/SAT score and apply for a holistic admit to UT and/or A&M and apply as early as possible.
Thanks
