I think you’ll at least get into CLA. Whether or not you get into CBS depends more on your future ACT score.

This year UMN is having applicants use SRAR (Self-Reported Academic Record) to report grades, courses, and test scores. No need to send in anything officially till you are accepted and choose to attend. The SRAR is a separate submission so you can actually go ahead and send in the UMN application and then wait to get that ACT score back before sending in the SRAR.

It’s always good to apply early. My son’s application tracker message says that decisions will begin in October.

Forgot to add after edit:
College choices are CBS and CLA

They have already begun notifying of acceptances. Have you applied yet?

The stats seem good for CLA and your rank in the top 12% is very strong. CBS might require a higher ACT to be a “lock”. Did you give them a good reason for why you chose CLA as second choice?

I have a friend with similar stats as me that got admitted to CLA. My explanation for the college choices was that I chose Biology for preparation for Pre-Med and Psychology in CLA because I have an interest in psychology/going into psychiatry.

I honestly have some regret to it and am considering changing it up.

This makes me have two questions being whether I’ll get in and if I should try to update the majors of my already-submitted application.

I didn’t type out a whole paragraph or anything for the explanation for majors; I just did 2-3 sentences briefly explaining my career interests and how they relate to the majors chosen.

The reason I did it in that order was because the alternative college of choice was explained as a college to be considered in case I do not get accepted to the first one, so then I concluded the alternative choice should be the easier one.

I printed out the Application Update form that I can mail out to them and for the update major spot it just says “Intended major”
So I just might fill that out for a CLA major like Psychology or Physiology

Should I leave my application how it is with CBS, CLA or update it on paper?

You can do bio/pre-med through CLA as well! And psychology can be a great major for Pre-Med, as long as you fulfill the requirements.

Perhaps it’s a good idea to examine your goals and how those college selections will help you realize them. If you then feel you should update your explanation, go ahead and contact UMN for the best way to do so, whether it be the Application Update or other means.

The primary factors for admission will be your stats. However, reading your explanation of major might give you an edge for CBS. Not sure your current explanations will hurt you for CLA.

Hurt me with CLA? How so?
And how would you compare my chances with CBS and CLA given your estimates?

Now that I think of it, I might just leave the colleges of choice how it is
CBS Biology, Physiology, then CLA Psychology as Alternative

My explanation just states I am highly interested in PreMed and I don’t know if that really is good for a CBS applicant

I am also taking the ACT in October hoping to score around 29. I can’t tell if I’ll get an admission decision before the test, but if not, I’ll rely on the ACT.

@Pear19 - as mentioned above, your stats seem find for CLA; the ACT probably needs to be higher for CBS. Your current explanations for major choices most likely will NOT hurt you as far as admission to CLA so probably no need to re-vamp your application, unless you wish to underscore Bio/Pre-Med as a primary interest for either college but allow that you would be able to double major in Psych or Psysio if admitted to CLA (since it’s very common to double major in that college).

@Pear19 just read your two last posts. Your current explanations are most likely fine. Good luck with your October ACT! If you happen to get a decision to CLA in the next few weeks you might be able to appeal if your ACT is notably higher.

Thanks JB, I’ll make sure to work on it.

Also, with my ACT being only a 27, would a 10 in writing add any significant increase in admission chances? The UMN website said they highly recommend taking the writing section and that they consider it a secondary factor.

@Pear19 perhaps. But your best shot at CBS would be to improve a few points on the ACT itself, as that is a primary factor. My son didn’t submit an SAT essay score to CLA, although he did submit his Common App essay.

@Pear19 I recently was admitted to the UMN CBS with a 29 act. I think if you can get a 28/29 that will put you in good standing for admission there. I did recently talk to a Rep and he told me that if you put “premed” as one of your tracts and you want to go to CBS, it may cause you to be put into CLA because you can be premed there as well or anywhere actually. Having a good reason for why you choose your major I think plays a decent role in being accepted to CBS. Best of luck! Keep us updated!

I’m happy to say that despite my low statistics, I got into CBS.

@pear19 congrats!
